RE: [SCOW] Racing Sun Night?

Hi Todd and David,

Sorry, I could  not get a Flying Scot for tomorrow, and do not need crew. Just because I express an intent to reserve a Scot, doesn’t necessarily mean I will get one.

In the future, to avoid this misunderstanding, I will state that I will try to reserve a boat, then send a subsequent e-mail asking for crew when I actually get one. BTW, this is the first time in several months that I have not been able to get a boat when I wanted one.

I’m sending this to all-scow just to be sure no one else makes the same assumption.

Greetings PRSA Sailors,

I just wanted to pass along the final fundraising total, along with a big "thank you!" from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for those who raced, raised funds, and generally supported the LLS mission at the 2012 President's/Leukemia Cup.  All told, we helped the LLS raise $142,000 in support of their work to research and cure blood cancers!  Many thanks to all of the PRSA sailors who raised funds in support of this fine cause, and congratulations to anybody who braved the conditions on Saturday to race on the first day of the President's/Leukemia Cup.

For those boats that raised funds and also raised on Saturday, the LLS Racing Awards (based on Saturday's racing results) will be presented at the 2012 PRSA AGM.

Cheers,

(Career Progress) EARN $100 CASH - Great Opportunity for DC Youth

*apologies in advance for any cross postings*

Good Afternoon,

First, I would like to thank you for your continued support. Without your community leadership and partnership, we would not be able to do the work that we do and have such a tremendous effect on needed community changes surrounding alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

Attached to th
is message is a great opportunity for youth to earn a little bit of cash for speaking their minds.

APRA is working with Octane Public Relations & Advertising to conduct a series of focus groups for youth and the parents of youth that will take place in October. They are looking for DC Youth to participate in focus groups surrounding the topic, you guessed it: Synthetic Marijuana!

Youth be awarded $100 for their participation. There will be three youth focus groups: 12-14, 15-18 and 19-25 and one group consisting of parents of youth ages 18-25.

Attached is the flyer for this effort.

Please spread the word to your professional and personal networks and direct all calls to the number on the image below for more information.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our youth to have their voices heard and for us to continue to help lead the charge towards a Drug-Free District and Nation.

Thank you for your continued support.

Henrik Ibsen's
Hedda Gabler

I like the idea of just buying the floats made for the Scots. I’ll help put them on. We’ve got plenty other maintenance to do on the boats without adding the chore of making up a float when there’s already one specifically for the boat.

And btw, love that photo of the goat float.

Hey there!

Thanks everybody for weighing in and looking around for floats for the top of our masts to help keep our Flying Scots from turning turtle in a capsize. I made a call to the Flying Scot folks and they carry a mast-head float made for the Flying Scot that we can purchase. Annapolis Performance Sailing also carries some. I'll send this off to our great volunteers in our committees and get their recommendations. I bet we might find some floats that are a good fit.

[SCOW] Mast-head floats, capsize - Flying Scot class forums

Hello again,

I'm curious, do any of the SCOW skippers also monitor the Flying Scot class forums?  What, if anything, do they have to say about capsize recovery techniques or commercially available masthead floats?

[SCOW] masthead float

Hi Sailors,

Interesting sequence of emails yesterday, and I intended to send this out then...

I sail/race my buccaneer 18 (it's got a planning hull and is quite a bit more responsive (tippy) than a scot.) Capsize/turtle and recovery are regular topics on the bucc chat list.  One of the sailors made a nice and fairly subtle sail-head float.  He races with this installed and regularly beats all the locals, so this clearly isn't slowing him down.  Here is his description and a photo, it's quite similar to the link John just sent...

I made a float that hoists up with my mainsail. Cut 4 pieces of 1/2" exercise mat foam or camp pad foam, (cheap stuff from Wal mart) to the shape of the head of the main. 4 pieces nylon roughly 4 inches bigger than the foam in all directions. Sewed the system together.

I slip my mainsail head inside the pocket and hoist it up as if it is part of the sail.

Works great, can't tell it is up there.

The trick with recovering a bucc from capsize is to get it up before it turns turtle.  The mast-head float helps with that.  I'm not sure how quickly scots turtle.

The photo is quite small, but the black triangle on top of the sail is the float.
