[news] UTC group calls for response to prayer letter

source:
http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2012/aug/18/utc-group-calls-for-response-to-prayer/

The Secular Student Alliance at UTC on Friday advanced the debate about public prayer on the school's campus and in Hamilton County.
The group urged its members to contact UTC administrators after learning about a letter from the Freedom From Religion Foundation that challenges Christian prayers at university events such as football games.
"This is definitely an issue where religious minorities feel excluded because of the explicitly and only Christian nature of these prayers," said Bryan Barkley, a 23-year-old University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior and a founding member of the Secular Student Alliance. "We encourage anyone to call and just let them know how they feel."
The Chattanooga Times Free Press first reported on Friday that UTC administrators received a letter in May from the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation. The letter specifically mentions prayers held by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at football games beginning in 2010.
Jay Fowler, local director of the fellowship, said the university has asked the group to lead prayers in the past.
"We've never pushed that or to do that," Fowler said. "We're very thankful that we've had that opportunity. If the university continues to ask us to do [the prayers], we will be happy to."
UTC Associate Vice Chancellor Chuck Cantrell confirmed Friday that university officials have not taken any additional steps after receiving the letter from the Freedom From Religion Foundation.
"We have received their request, and we are taking [it] under consideration," Cantrell said.
The issue of prayers at government meetings is rippling through the county.
The Hamilton County Commission is embroiled in a lawsuit over the use of Christian prayers to open its weekly meetings. The Freedom from Religion Foundation sent a separate letter in May to Hamilton County commissioners, asking them to stop holding Christian prayers.
Commissioners continued to hold their prayers, and two residents filed a federal lawsuit seeking to stop them in June. A major order on a motion for preliminary injunction in that case is expected soon.
On Thursday, the Hamilton County Election Commission held a moment of silence instead of its usual invocation.
Election Commissioner Jerry Summers said the panel doesn't want to get tangled up in the lawsuit against the commission.
"We don't need to be brought into it," he said. "To keep us from getting into more trouble, we need to have a moment of silence."
Summers said he doesn't personally oppose prayer, but he's just "trying to save the taxpayers' money."

Hi Folks

I've included some of our friends at DC Sail, PRSA and QYC in this request for assistance.

Chimera, the newest S2 7.9 in the DISC fleet, is doing RC for the Leukemia Cup.  The owners, Dave and Bryn, are game and happy to do RC.  But they could use some more experienced assistance as insurance that the multi-race format will go off cleanly.

Can we get some volunteers that are reasonably comfortable with a moderately complex PHRF RC for Saturday Sept 8?  Ideally, someone who has actually run RC though that is not a deal breaker.

Thanks
Gary

I've used both Haven Charters out of Rock Hall and Let's Go Cruising out of Annapolis.

Haven Charters has a limited number of individual older boats, at cheaper prices, and it's a bit out of the way.

LGC has brand new boats, great locations, better support, but pricier.

LGC also has a location out of Solomon's if you are looking to venture further South, saves you a day coming and going from Annapolis.

I've worked with Haven Charters out of Rock Hall, MD a few times in the
past.

You can look at their charter boats on their website:
<http://www.havencharters.com/>

They're a bit cheaper than most places in Annapolis, in my experience,
although it's a longer drive if you're heading out from DC/NoVA.

In other news, please note that we just repainted the woodwork on Rebecca so her crew should be extra careful not to rub up against it to possibly paint themselves. Also, a new compass for Rebecca is on order and likely to be here next Monday or Tues. Also, please remember that when you come back to the docks as skipper, make sure to leave time to wash down the decks and cabin sole on the boats and to remove all personal gear, so that the boat is in nice ship-shape for the next skipper.

To: Jim McBride <networkforprogress@gmail.com>

Hi Jim--

Early bird tickets for RootsCamp end this Saturday, and we wanted to make sure you got in before prices go up. Right now, tickets start at $35 now, but that goes up to $50 after September 1.

Get your tickets now before prices go up on September 1.

We're planning the biggest RootsCamp ever to debrief this election cycle and refocus for the next fight. We can't put this show on without you, so we hope you'll join us and bring your friends. You'll learn new skills and tricks of the trade, share your own lessons from this cycle, and maybe even find your next opportunity.

Save your spot at RootsCamp 2012 now.

See you there,

Judith, Jamie, Brittani, Evan, Deepa, and the whole NOI team

PS - We'll need volunteers to make RootsCamp awesome, and volunteers get in free. Sign up here!

[SCOW] Social Sail, Tonight at 6:00--Chili Dinner for Leukemia Cup

Greetings fellow sailors,

SCOW's Thursday night Social Sail is ON!  Julian has stepped up to serve as dockmaster, so we'll have dinner AND sailing.  The weather forecast calls for 85 degrees with wind of 5 knots.  Just about perfect!

I'll be serving my competition chili* with all the trimmings: beans (on the side) spaghetti, cheese, and onion.  We will also have corn bread, salad, watermelon, and cookies.  A donation of $10 is requested for GIT-R-DONE's Leukemia Cup fundraising campaign.

FAQ's:
1.  Is the chili hot?  I'd call it medium. I have two kinds of hot sauce (from Belize and St. Vincents) to spice it up, if you're inclined.
2.  Do you have vegetarian chili?  No, but the beans were made without any meat products, and they are a meal in themselves when served on spaghetti with cheese and onions.

Hope to see you all tonight,

Bruce Baker
S/V GIT-R-DONE

* Competition chili is all-meat chili.  Beans, pasta, hominy, and other "fillers" are forbidden under the rules. (In Texas, beans are eaten on the side.)  With this recipe I have qualified for and competed in: the Chili Appreciation Society International's "Terlingua International Chili Championship" (5 times) and the International Chili Society's "World Championship" (3 times).

[SCOW] Skirmish tonight at 6-ish

Last time several folks saw "Skirmish" and asked me what SCOW fights are like.

Someday we hope to institute official SCOW brawls but not anytime soon.  Skirmish is one of our cruisers.

Winds are forecast as light this evening, but we can still take Skirmish out and anchor in the cove to watch the Scot racing.

Please RSVP via e-mail or text (240.778.5198) and be prepared to bring a snack and drink to share.

(Career Progress) Fwd: DC Event for Changemakers and troublemakers tomorrow

To: Jim McBride <jimmcbride13@gmail.com>

beautiful troubleHi Jim--

Tomorrow, some of the best organizers in our movement are launching Beautiful Trouble -- The Creative Activist's Toolbox for the 21st Century. The launch event is here in DC, and we wanted to make sure you knew about it.

When: Wednesday, August 29th, 6:30 pm

Where: Busboys and Poets, 2021 14th Street NW, Washington DC

RSVP here.

I've known many of the organizers who contributed to this book for years, and what they've put together here is one of the most valuable resources for organizing that I've seen.

We've seen how the web and technology play a role in social uprisings; from the Arab Spring's use of social networks to the Occupy movement's use of design and tools, creative activism has sparked the hearts of minds of ordinary people everywhere.

Beautiful Trouble tells that story and invites us to join the discussion about what's next.

I hope you'll come down to celebrate the launch, meet some of the authors, and check out this great book.

Hope to see you there,

Judith

This is your invitation to come out to Thursday's social sail at the Washington Sailing Marina.  The weather forecast is calling for a spectacular evening on the water, and I'll be serving up my Texas style competition chili with all the trimmings: beans (always served on the side in Texas), spaghetti, cheese, and onion.  My co-chef, Rhonda Glassman will be providing corn bread and salad.  Afterward, there will be cookies and watermelon.

Your donation of $10 will fill your belly and provide a needed boost to the GIT-R-DONE Leukemia Cup Campaign.

I saw that and was pretty surprised.  I guess he thought his teammate Spittal would give him room, but looked to me like Spittal was intent on closing the gap.  I thought Coutts probably could've fallen off and avoided a collision with both the committee boat and the other boats in the vicinity.  Of course, this is a reaching start, and these boats travel very quickly, so your reaction time has to be right on point.

One more thing.  It's definitely nice to have most of the coverage of the America's Cup to be on the water instead of in the courtroom.

Thanks for the great article.  I just got to reading it this evening.  I'll have to look for the footage of that last race in Venice to see what the pile-up looked like.  In watching the highlights from the racing in San Francisco, it was nice to see the circles around the turning marks, the lay lines, and the distance between boats all right there nicely illustrated on the the screen.

Not until I read the article and started watching the races, did I realize how much the rules have been changed.  Umpires calling penalties live, no 360-penalty turns, no going back to the start line to clear a false start.  Just slow down the boat as your competitors pass you by until you get the green light from the umps to turn on the heat again.

I definitely found this coverage more compelling than the coverage of the olympic sailing events.  It would be nice to have such coverage for the upcoming Leukemia Cup Regatta (http://nca.lcr.llsevent.org/).

Thanks again,

Charles
