(Career Progress) Hiring: WorkElections Internship, Summer 2022

Fair Elections Center is a national, nonpartisan voting rights and election reform 501(c)(3) organization based in Washington, DC. Our mission is to use litigation and advocacy to remove barriers to registration and voting, particularly those disenfranchising underrepresented and marginalized communities, and to improve election administration.

About the Project:

Many local election officials struggle to recruit volunteers for Election Day, including those with in-demand technological and language skills. WorkElections.org, a nonpartisan project of Fair Elections Center, helps them do that. It collects and centralizes information on employment requirements and application processes for over 5,000 jurisdictions in 47 states. Individuals who are interested in serving as poll workers can visit the website, select their state and jurisdiction, and receive location-specific instructions and links to applications to serve in that jurisdiction.

The website launched in 2018 and played an active role in helping election officials recruit poll workers for the 2020 elections. Between June and November 2020, WorkElections had over one million visitors, with over 158,000 clicking an "Apply Now" button.

In addition, the WorkElections database and API was used by Power the Polls, a collaborative project we co-founded, through which over 700,000 individuals signed up to indicate their interest in serving as poll workers. In 2022, we aim to build on that success and to continue helping recruit new poll workers nationwide.

About the Position:

The WorkElections intern will work with Fair Election Center's National Special Projects Manager on efforts to improve WorkElections.org, increase its use, maintain its database, and help ensure that sufficient numbers of poll workers are recruited in 2022. The intern will also spend some of their time working to support Power the Polls, which uses WorkElections data. The overall aims of both these efforts are to help election officials recruit the staff needed to administer elections, to diversify the pool of poll workers nationally by encouraging individuals from underrepresented groups to sign up, and to prevent polling places from being closed or consolidated due to staff shortages.

This work will take several forms, including:

Internet research to collect and maintain up-to-date poll worker recruitment information (e.g. application links, compensation, training details, and employment requirements) for thousands of election jurisdictions.

Monitoring poll worker recruitment needs at the state and local levels nationwide.

Phone and email outreach to election officials.

Correspondence with members of the public who use the site.

Support existing partner organizations.

Help recruit new partners to Power the Polls.

This work will be done remotely, with trainings/check-ins taking place via phone call or videoconference.

You Are:

A graduate student (pursuing a degree in public policy or a related subject) with strong research and communication skills, close attention to detail, and a passion for democracy and helping to improve election administration in the U.S.

All candidates should be proficient in the Microsoft and Google software suites. Candidates who possess keen organizational skills, are effective communicators, and identify as strong self-starters are ideal for this position.

Time Commitment:

This is a paid, full-time remote position. The intern will be expected to work 35 daytime hours per week from Tuesday, May 31 until Friday, August 19, 2022. Start/end dates can be slightly adjusted if necessary.

Compensation:

A $5,000 stipend will be paid over the course of the internship in bimonthly increments.

How to Apply:

Send resume and cover letter detailing your interest in this project and relevant skills to Ryan Pierannunzi, FEC National Special Projects Manager, at ryan@fairelectionscenter.org. Please use the subject line "Application: WorkElections Summer Internship".

The priority deadline to apply is May 2, 2022. However, candidates will be considered on a rolling basis, until the position is filled. Fair Elections Center is an equal opportunity employer and enthusiastically encourages applicants of all backgrounds to apply.

(Career Progress) Program Coordinator - Mail Programs at The Voter Participation Center / The Center for Voter Information

PositionProgram Coordinator - Washington, DC or remote

Reports to: Deputy Director of Mail Programs

Organization Description: The Voter Participation Center (VPC) is the nation's largest non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to registering and mobilizing voters from the New American Majority (NAM) – people of color, unmarried women and young people – who make up the majority of the potential electorate but have been historically underrepresented in political participation and power. Using direct mail, digital and social media outreach, guided by rigorous data science and experimentation, and working closely with a multitude of partner organizations, VPC connects with millions of voters each year, building the foundation for a more representative democracy.

Over 19 years VPC has helped more than 5.7 million people register to vote. In 2020, as COVID-19 shut down most forms of in-person voter contact, VPC helped more than 4.6 million people apply to vote by mail & cast ballots, registered more than 1.6 million people, and assisted millions of voters in voting early and safely to reduce pressures on polling places on Election Day.

VPC programs are flexible, nimble and scalable. VPC is driven by a commitment to constant research, testing, experimentation and evaluation, and thus offers many of the most cost effective, proven, high-impact programs in the civic engagement field.

The Center for Voter Information (CVI) is VPC's partner organization, and is a separate but affiliated 501(c)4 non-profit that works to engage both the NAM as well as members of the broader electorate who share their values.

  • Ability to be a positive, collaborative team player

  • Comfortability working in a high stakes, dynamic environment
