Yes, a most interesting report. Jan, I agree, good suggestions . I think we
should also consider trying the "piggybacking" technique (p. 8) for
righting the Scots after a capsize during our next capsize course. The Scot
is a pretty heavy boat, and I observed the last couple of times I
participated that it sometimes took 2 people on the centerboard to pull the
boat back up, especially with lighter-weight people.

Julian - thank you so much for sharing this important study with SCOW
members. I think SCOW should consider acquiring and requiring the use of
the masthead floatation device (the mainsail head slip-on bouyancy device or
"floatie") on the Scots. The cost is minimal compared to potential crew
injury, loss of a life, or damage to boat/sails occasioned by turtling in
our sailing area. It may be time to create an appointed "Safety Officer"
position and/or "Safety Committee" for the Club, too. Jan Earle
