Re: [Unicum] Cell Phone Purchase in Hungary

Everybody in my family has smart phones and we use an app called Viber (available for both iPhones and Androids). It's a free app, calls and texts are free. I can send images and short audio messages for free too. It's really great! It has a different ring tone, so I always know when I get calls from Hungary. ;)

Re: [Unicum] Cell Phone Purchase in Hungary

To call a Hungarian land line or a U.S. land or cell line for free, I use voipbuster. Once I put some money on it (I think the minimum is 10 Euros), you can call Hungarian land lines for free for a year. Calling a Hungarian cell phone is about 20 Euro cents per minute. I use it from a computer, so I don't know if the rates are different calling from a cell.

RE: [Unicum] Cell Phone Purchase in Hungary

A bit more info. T-Mobile has unlimited landline AND cell calls to Hungary for $15/mo. In Hungary, just about everyone uses a cell phone. Of course, if you call landline, Skype is cheaper at $6.99, because that plan is $10 at T-Mobile. T-Mobile’s rate per minute is 20c, which is lower than Skype’s and you can take your phone to Hungary and use it there for 20c/minute as well (no need to get it unlocked).

Hi all,

Now that we have this telecommunication discussion going, I was wondering if anyone has info on how to best call Hungarian cell numbers.

For calling landlines in Hungary (from the US or anywhere, even within Hungary), the best structure I found is Skype's monthly subscription of unlimited calls to Hungarian landlines for $6.99/month - it works for our family and business but since Skype is now Microsoft, compatibility with Apple products or consistent quality of calls seems to be less supported (like access to Contacts, etc.)

(By the way, Skype also has a subscription for unlimited calls for any US/Canadian phones for $2.99/month. Expect some occasional static noise or fade-outs.)

It is nevertheless a good deal to call aunts, grandma's or organizations/businesses who have no smart phones but sure have a landline.  I even set it up for my mother living in Hungary that she can use from her computer.  You can also use this service with wifi when traveling if you have a  tablet or laptop (or smart phone, as it was pointed out before) and you don't mind to depend on wifi availability.

Unfortunately, to call Hungarian cell phones you need something else - phone card, Skype credit (26c per minute), local cell phone or whatever your choice might be.

Does anyone has a more economical suggestion for calling cell numbers?  Most of my contacts in Hungary have no smart phones so "online" service at their end is not an option at this point.

Thanks,

Erika

PS The Skype subscriptions have to be set up from a US IP-address to get these prices, if you try to do it from Europe it costs more and the plans are different, too.

(Career Progress) Join us tonight for a "How to Elect More Women" Panel Discussion and Networking Happy Hour

Hello,

I want to invite you to the Arlington Young Democrats Women's Caucus event this evening on the subject matter of best strategies for electing more women representatives.

What: "How to Elect More Women" Panel Discussion and Networking Happy Hour

When: Wednesday, July 23rd 5:30-630 pm
5:30-6:30 pm Networking Happy Hour. Free Appetizers Provided.
6:30-8:30 pm Panel Discussion with Q and A

Who: Panelists include:

1.) Senator Jennifer Wexton, VA State Senator of the 33rd Senate District
2.) Senator Barbara Favola, VA State Senator of the 31st Senate District
3.) Jennifer Boysko, former and future House of Delegate candidate of VA's 86th district
4.) Kathleen Murphy, former and future House of Delegate candidate of VA's 34th district
5.) Yasmine Taeb, former House of Delegate candidate of VA's 48th district

Where: Café Asia: 1550 Wilson Blvd #100, Arlington, VA 22209

Metro: Rosslyn (Orange and Blue line) Parking: Available on street and in Café Asia garage for $3

Why: It's more than evident, we need to elect more women in this country and we need to do it now. The United States ranks 98th in the world in number of women in our national legislature. At this panel we will ask our panelist about best strategies in order to elect more women at both the state and national level. We will learn about the barriers that exist and how to combat them.

Right now there are 335 state legislative leaders, and just 60 of them are women, a total of 17.9 percent. In Virginia, only 17% of its legislative body is represented by women, compared to states like Colorado and Vermont where 41% of their legislative bodies are represented by women. Virginia leads states like Louisiana, Oklahoma and South Carolina, which currently have the least diverse gender representation at 13% but none of this is acceptable for the 21st century.

Join us this Wednesday, July 23rd to socialize, ask our panelist questions, and learn about organizations that work to elect more women such as Planned Parenthood and Naral Pro-Choice.

Point of Contact: For questions contact AYD Outreach Director Michelle Woods at Outreach@ArlingtonYoungDems.org

Re: [Unicum] Cell Phone Purchase in Hungary

You guys make this so complicated.
Here is a simple and free solution for free :)

Download the Wassap application on your smart phone and look for places with a wi-fi connection wherever you are (Europe, Latin-America, Africa, etc). Skype and FaceTime works the same way. FaceTime is only on IPhones.
Those are internet based applications, you don't need a phone service (with international lines).

To call somebody you don't have to use an actual phone and dial numbers anymore!
I have an IPhone with a plan that allows me free international calls and unlimited texting with 22 countries. I don't know if Hungary is on that list or not, never looked it up. Haven't used a phone for an international call since 1998, why, when you could see the other person too? Just saying :)

As far as I know, all providers have prepaid cards that officially require a contract of one year but there is no mandatory monthly refill.  So technically once your credit is up, you're financially free, you just can't officially "cancel" service before the 12 months is over. In Hungary, you don't have to pay for incoming calls (so even with your credit used up, you'll still get them!) but each cell provider has its own area code so all landlines (and other providers) are long distance.
The only exception is T-Mobile which is part of T-Com that owns most of Hungary's landline service, so you stay "within network." Their prepaid card is called "Domino" and some phones are almost as cheap as used ones when you buy it at sign up.  You can always get a prepaid sim card without buying a phone, just make sure the phone is either unlocked or set to T-Com.
Telenor and Vodafone also used to have their prepaid service but I'm not familiar with those.  Hungary has only GSM networks and phones so they all use sim cards - make sure you know what size the device needs.

Good luck, enjoy your trip!

I would want to have a phone that I can go to the ATM and add money to the machine for the minutes I will use.

Please let me know your suggestions off-list.

RE: [Unicum] Cell Phone Purchase in Hungary

You are mixing up prepaid and billed services. Prepaid does not require a contract.

Also, once you are already in Hungary, you can shop around, because various providers give you decent rates for the day or for the night. If you use your phone only after 6 pm, as far as I can recall, Vodafone gives you the best rates. When I lived in Hungary, I had two prepaid cards with two phones: one for the night (Vodafone; at the time it was about 8c/min) and one for the day (Telenor, costing about the same as using a US T-Mobile phone in Hungary (20c/min). There are also unlimited packages for families (I am familiar with the Telenor options only, which are dirt cheap).
