"Egy fecske nem csinál nyarat." – Hungarian proverb

Our Hungarian friends taught me this saying during the 2013 Folklife Festival. It translates literally to "one swallow does not a summer make," or as they explained it to me, an individual needs help to make a difference.

We need your help to make a difference. Please support the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage to help us support cultural sustainability and vitality.

I hope you include the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage in your year-end giving. Your gift is tax-deductible and supports our mission to present and preserve cultural traditions from around the country and the world. A gift of $25, $50, $150, or more by December 31 will go a long way toward developing with programming in 2014.

Our whole team sincerely appreciates your support—whether you visited us at the 2013 Festival or purchased an album from Smithsonian Folkways Records. Your kindness and your generosity make possible all that we do. We thank you and wish you the best of the season.

Sincerely,

Michael Atwood Mason, PhD.

"Sándor Tarics (born September 23, 1913) is a Hungarian water polo
player who competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics. Since the death of
Attilio Pavesi, he has been the oldest living Olympic champion.

Born in Budapest, Tarics was part of the Hungarian team which won the
gold medal, pushing Germany into second. He played two matches, and
scored two goals. He was able to escape post-war Soviet-occupied
Hungary when his engineering degree earned him a teaching fellowship
at an American university. He went on to establish and grow a
successful architecture and engineering practice in San Francisco,
California. As of 2013 he lives in Belvedere, California and is a
member of the Belvedere Tennis Club. He attented the 2012 London
Olympics as the oldest living Olympic champion and turned 100 in
September 2013..."

"When Sándor Tarics arrived at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, aged 23, it
seemed like he was walking into a German military boot camp. "There
were swastikas everywhere," Tarics remembers from his waterfront home
in Belvedere, California. "There were all these uniformed soldiers.
And Hitler."

The Hungarian water polo player and his team went on to take the gold
medal, pushing the Germans into second place, to Hitler's dismay."
