Its time get your game-face on! Next Wednesday, April 18, we start
racing the Flying Scots. The purpose of SCOW Wed night racing is
learning. We are here to learn racing rules, tactics and boat handling
in a friendly forum. The races start at 6pm.
After listening to feedback we have made the following changes this
year -
1) A large number of folks showed up last year and many did not get to
race because of overcrowding. This year Wednesday night racing is a
SCOW member only event.
2) The use of spinnakers is allowed and encouraged; however the
prerogative to fly the spinnaker remains that of the skipper. If you
are as skipper and need help and would like to learn the spinnaker,
just ask one of our club's spinnaker skippers for assistance and you
will learn it. Like sailing, it just takes practice and it's fun once
learned.
3) To make the races more interesting and let body weight play a role,
we are limiting the total number on each boat to 4.
4) Topaz will be used as the Race Committee (RC) boat. An air horn
will used for signaling with three blasts to start the 3 minute
countdown. This will solve the problem from last year whereby some
boats could not hear the starting signals. The RC boat will also be
used for overflow, to switch folks out of the Scots as needed.
5) As you know, Wednesday night racing works on a first come first
serve basis. Only the first 22 people will be able to participate. So
make sure you get there early.
As always we welcome volunteers to help with the race. Please reach
out to me at racing@scow.org if you want to help. We also welcome
constructive feedback and suggestions.
Thank you all! See you next week.
