CFS Research/Policy Internship
Background
The Leadership Center for the Common Good supports locally-based
nonprofit organizations dedicated to community organizing. This
includes leadership and staff development, refining and implementing
organizing models, developing issue campaigns, building communications
capacity, and planning civic engagement activities. In all these areas
Common Good provides a range of services, from generating materials to
hosting trainings to providing fundraising support.
Common Good has a deep background in community activism and
organizing, including online organizing. Much of the intern's
responsibility will be to work closely with the staff of Common Good
and its partner organizations to create and develop online campaigns
that help them advance their core offline campaign and electoral work.
One the Common Good's current campaigns is the Campaign for a Fair
Settlement
The Campaign for a Fair Settlement (CFS) is a coalition of progressive
organizations nationally and in states hit hardest by the foreclosure
crisis working to hold banks accountable for their role in the
foreclosure crisis, and protect homeowners and taxpayers. The campaign
has worked in close coordination with organizations including MoveOn,
Credo Action, New Bottom Line, Working Families Party, Color of
Change, Campaign for America's Future, and dozens of local and
community-based groups nationwide.
Job Description
We are looking for candidates interested in helping develop research
on issues of importance to low- and moderate-income families and a
progressive public policy agenda. Specifically, the candidate will
research issues related to the housing crisis, mortgage foreclosure
and the national mortgage settlement. Interns will work with the
policy departments of existing national and state partners, and help
integrate this into the campaigns overall campaign strategy. Intern
will also build digital tools to help track research, communications,
and actions related to the campaign and its partners.
Typical responsibilities include:
- Drafting relevant policy papers for review by campaign manager and
director
- Developing background research on key political and organizational
targets
- Analyze data and existing research and determining top-line
takeaways.
- Draft and locate research material to populate web-based properties
- Brainstorm other campaign opportunities for the field, online, and
in the media
- Other as directed by campaign staff
Qualifications
• Strong writing skills
• Ability to work closely with other members of a team, but also to
manage your work independently
• Willingness to learn and take constructive criticism
• Familiarity with progressive public policy issues, especially
economic and racial justice issues.
• Knowledge of HTML is advantageous but not necessary
• Knowledge of Spanish is advantageous but no necessary
• Creativity
• Sense of humor
• Commitment to social justice
Duration & Location:
Internships are available immediately and last throughout a semester/
quarter. They are located in Washington, DC. They are located in

Organizing Intern:
Job Description
We are looking for candidates excited about entering the world of
political organizing around progressive issues. The candidate will be
helping develop and implement online and field campaigns on issues of
related to the housing crisis, foreclosures and the recent national
mortgage settlement. She/he will be assisting state and national
partners in implementing field activities and online actions. She/he
will work with all aspects of online campaigns, from drafting copy for
email blasts to implementing entire online action sequences through
our web properties and from creating and implementing causes and
campaigns on Facebook and Twitter to working with websites.
Typical responsibilities include:
- Writing email blasts and other online campaign pieces
- Writing and posting blog diaries
- Brainstorming mini online campaigns to help grow email lists
- All aspects of online campaign implementation
- Maintaining organizational presence in social networks like
Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc.
Qualifications
• 3-12 months of research experience preferably for candidate or issue
campaign
• Strong writing skills
• Ability to work closely with other members of a team, but also to
manage your work independently
• Willingness to learn and take constructive criticism
• Familiarity with progressive public policy issues, especially
economic and racial justice issues.
• Background in Economics, Political Science beneficial but not
necessary
• Knowledge of HTML is advantageous but not necessary
• Knowledge of Spanish is advantageous but no necessary
