"We hope that schools will stand up for the free-speech rights of students and the right to express their religious beliefs in opportunities like this and won't cave in to pressure," Sharp says, "but we think that's probably what their game plan is."
The Foundation sent letters to superintendents, claiming that student-led prayers before football games and at graduation ceremonies are unconstitutional. ADF disagrees.
"It's our understanding that when the focus is on the right and the message that a student on his or her own chooses to give, that that is protected student speech and that it's constitutional," the attorney offers.
ADF assures that Christian students have rights in public schools.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation, headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, claims that most social and moral progress has been brought about by persons free from religion.
