[SCOW] Tall ships in Baltimore this weekend

Hi All,

Many Tall Ships are coming to Baltimore this weekend. The Blue Angels will be there as well. It is the 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812. The Pride of Baltimore 2 is a replica of Chaussuer, a very fast Baltimore Clipper that was crucial in the war. Come to Baltimore and check her out this weekend. Below is more info.

You can also sail on her overnight. I have done this and it is a great experience. Go to www.pride2.org and click on overnight voyages. The Pride is sailing in many OpSail  events this year.

You will also see great photos of the tall ship festivals this year if you friend the Pride of Baltimore 2 on Facebook. They just posted amazing photos from the Norfolk event.

Best,

Lisa Carr

Baltimore's Privateer Welcomes You to
Star-Spangled SAILABRATION!

Two hundred years ago, our nation undertook the daring enterprise of declaring war upon Great Britain, the superpower of the age. This bold act, the first full-fledged declaration of war by an adolescent United States, was hotly debated but deemed necessary because the self-evident truths set down thirty-six years earlier in the Declaration of Independence were worth fighting to uphold, no matter what the odds. And in this case the odds weren't pretty. At sea, the U.S. Navy was outnumbered by the British six hundredd to sixteen. As we often tell students aboard Pride of Baltimore II, bad odds for a game of dodge ball; far worse for a naval engagement.

Seeking support for the beleaguered Navy, our government turned to the private sector, entreating them to engage in the age-old practice of privateering. A common tactic in maritime nations throughout the great age of sail, privateering enabled private citizens to arm and outfit ships to cruise the seas on the hunt for merchant vessels of the foe. From Maine to Georgia such ships sailed under letters of Marque and Reprisal, funded by investors and entrepreneurs ashore, who speculated their assets in joint ventures with the faith that daring captains and brave crews would sail triumphantly home with a string of British prizes to their record, and a hold full of coin as their return.

Of the dozens of ports that launched the five hundred and more Privateers of the War of 1812, none came near the success of Baltimore. The Chesapeake innovation was unleashed and the havoc wrought by these Baltimore Privateers brought down the wrath of the British, who came to test our mettle at Fort McHenry and Hempstead Hill. Our City's stalwart defense brought inspiration to Francis Scott Key's pen and marked Baltimore permanently on the world's charts as the center of maritime advancement.

For 24 years Pride of Baltimore II has been bringing the storied maritime history of her home port to people and ports around the globe. Today, as the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 dawns, the eyes of the world are on Baltimore. We are delighted to welcome our friends ~ old, new, and those we have not yet met ~ to join in our hometown celebration.

Cheers!
