(Career Progress) Future Executive Directors Fellowship (applications due at 5pm)
Future Executive Directors Fellowship
About the Fellowship
Background:
In July 2008, we announced the inaugural class of 25 emerging leaders in the Nonprofit Roundtable's Future Executive Directors Fellowship. It was the first program of this focus and intensity to be offered to emerging nonprofit leaders who aspire to the nonprofit executive director position. We launched a second class of 25 Fellows in 2010.
The Fellows participated in an intensive program designed to prepare them for executive directorships, diving deep into fundraising, communications, human resources, financial management, negotiating effectively, building partnerships, and achieving work/life balance. Fellows were exposed to a rich network of mentors, colleagues, faculty, and current nonprofit executive directors to help them develop as leaders. Their mentors were all current or former executive directors who candidly shared their real-life experiences in leading organizations in the Greater Washington Area.
The program was launched on the heels of Meyer Foundation's 2008 report, Ready to Lead, which showed that one-third of emerging nonprofit leaders have aspirations of becoming executive directors, 40 percent of which said that they would be ready within five years. But what we've seen is that our Fellows are ready now. Outcomes from the 2008 & 2010 Fellowships include:
- Among the 50 fellows who participated in the 2008 and 2010 fellowships, seven have since assumed positions as Executive Directors.
- 100 percent of the fellows developed and achieved a personal leadership goal during the Fellowship.
- One fellow saved their organization at least $300,000 through their stretch assignment completed during the fellowship.
- Several fellows became Board members of local nonprofits.
- Several fellows are now working on advocacy projects; working to increase the living wage, improve language access services in healthcare settings, and increase the availability of affordable housing.
- Each class of fellows cultivated a robust support network for each other, which has carried with the fellows for years beyond the program itself.
Program Schedule:
The Program Schedule can be found here.
Program Cost:
The Future Executive Directors Fellowship is made possible by American Express and Gelman, Rosenberg and Freedman CPAs. The program is open to Roundtable Members at the cost of $250. The cost to Fellows from non-member organizations is $500. Payment will be required within two weeks of acceptance into the program.

[SCOW] Flying Scot hand held radios
Hello sailors!
Please remember to return the Flying Scot radios to the Sail Locker after use, don’t stick them in your sailing bags and forget them. We are going to get a sailing bag for each Flying Scot, where the radio and first aid kit can be stored in the sail locker and returned there after use.
In the meantime we were missing most of the radios for training today. If you know the whereabouts of any of them (they are labeled with each boat’s name) please write to me at secretary@scow.org
Many thanks,

[news] Shatter: Everyone is obliged to report sex abuse Read more: http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/shatter-everyone-is-obliged-to-report-sex-abuse-191995.html#ixzz1tTC4fp60
Nobody had raised any question about this or the 2011 Criminal Justice Act that placed the same obligation on the whole community, including priests, to assist gardaí with information.
The confessional was a diversion from the real issue, which had nothing to do with the confessional but with the fact that sexual abuse of children by clergy had been known about by religious orders and leaders as a result of parents, victims and others telling them, outside of the confessional.
"It was reported but covered up. And in the future it will be illegal for anyone across the community to do so," he said.
The legislation was about more than clerical abuse but was also designed to deal with the more prevalent cases of child abuse within families.
"This is a mammoth piece of legislation of great importance," he said, adding that the obligation to report information about it to gardaí should not have been excluded from the original 1998 law.
Meanwhile, an organisation has said it's a 'red herring' to focus on the seal of the confessional when discussing the statutory reporting of child abuse, as such an obligation would be impossible to monitor, according to the Irish Association of Catholic Priests (ACP).
The ACP yesterday reiterated that priests would never pass on information shared in the confessional as, during ordination, they take an oath ensuring total confidentiality.
Anyhow, any such mandatory reporting by priests would be "unenforceable", said Fr Brendan Hoban.
"There are only the two people in confessional, the priest and the confessor. So who could enforce this rule? Secondly, the dynamic of confession is that you don't know the identity of the person. You only hear the voice. Are you supposed to run out and take down their car registration?
"The second thing is that these type of confessions don't happen. There has never been any indication that such confessions have been made to a priest. So I don't think this is an issue at all," he said.
The row over the seal of confession erupted again when Mr Shatter published legislation on Wednesday that will make it a criminal offence for a person to fail to disclose information to gardaí that would assist in prosecuting a person who commits a serious offence against a child or vulnerable adult.
Under the legislation, anyone failing to pass on information could face up to 10 years in jail.
Mr Shatter warned that any defences published in the new laws would not protect priests from prosecution for failing to pass on information obtained during confession.
His draft legislation, which is due to be introduced later this year, also provoked a response from one of the Dublin Archdiocese's auxiliary bishops, Raymond Field, who said: "The seal of the confessional is inviolable as far as I am concerned, and that's the end of the matter."
Meanwhile, the Irish Association of Social Workers (IASW) has said that it "doesn't have enough staff to cope with its current workload, never mind with the increased demand once mandatory reporting is introduced".
IASW president Ineke Durville said: "People are not coping at all at the moment. Yes, on paper we got 260 new posts as part of the Ryan Report implementation plan, but at the same time, people retiring, on maternity leave and sick leave are not being replaced.
"We also fear that because there will be this renewed emphasis on child protection because of mandatory reporting, resources will be taken from early intervention and it is this early intervention that stops a welfare care becoming a crisis case. We are operating as a fire brigade service as it is and that, we would imagine, will increase even further."

[SCOW] Sun Evening Sail on Skirmish
[news] RI atheist group says cross should stay
[news] Atheist scouts told to “keep quiet” or lie about their beliefs
[news] Non-believer groups grow on campus
But he said he began experiencing a "de-conversion" during his early teenage years as he became more interested in science and began to believe that it was best to think logically when facing life's puzzles.
"When I was younger, I was deeply curious about how we got here," said Mr. Caro, who, until a couple of years ago, attended worship services at the local Congregational Church in Acton. "Reading a wide variety of views on the subject, talking with family and friends, and doing a lot of thinking on my own led me to my current position."
Mr. Caro said his views and beliefs are strictly in line with atheist thinking, but he added that he identifies himself more as a freethinker.
"That's because I follow the evidence and see where it takes me," he explained.
Mr. Caro is among the college students who have turned away from traditional religion and have become atheists, agnostics, secularists and humanists.
There is no data showing how many college students have turned a cold shoulder toward religion, but clubs and associations catering to non-believers have been steadily springing up on American campuses.
They stand side-by-side with long-established collegiate religious organizations such as the Roman Catholic Newman Society or the Jewish Hillel.
Many of the groups are affiliated with the national Secular Student Alliance, which has seen steady growth since its founding around 2000.
The SAC now has at least 300 chapters around the world.
The trend of students turning away from mainstream religion and embracing secular thinking seems to parallel the growth of humanism and atheism in the nation's cultural landscape.
The writings of atheists Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, for example, have elbowed out the works of other authors and are displayed prominently on library and bookstore shelves.
And while there are no polling numbers on college students, studies in 2008 by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life and the American Religion Identification Survey show that about 15 percent of U.S. adults claim no religious affiliation.
David Niose, a local attorney who is president of the American Humanist Association, said many students today prefer reason or logic over spirituality.
"They prefer a naturalist approach. They choose reason over the beliefs that come from ancient texts," said Mr. Niose.
He said he also believes many students are being driven to non-belief because of the rigid dogma and very conservative views espoused by some churches.
"The views of the political right also play in," said Mr. Niose. "Many college kids see the right's stands on issues as being backwards and out of date."
Mr. Niose said atheist and humanist organizations are now cropping up even on high school and religious college campuses.
Mr. Caro, who said that his maternal grandmother was a devout creationist, helped organize the Clark University Free Thought Society last October.
Many of its members had been attending meetings of the Greater Worcester Humanists group.
About a dozen individuals showed up at a recent Friday evening CUFTS meeting at Jonas Clark Hall, and the ensuing hour-long discussion revolved around horoscopes and superstitions.
Some of those attending admitted that they haven't definitively given up on their faiths, while one coed said she enjoyed the works of Eckhart Tolle, a New Age spiritual writer whose first book, "The Power of Now," topped several best-seller lists.
Participants agreed that many are drawn to superstitious practices and customs.
"I have to admit that I avoid breaking mirrors," said Andy Masley, a Webster native studying philosophy and physics.
Daphne Kinney-Landis, a freshman from Guilford, Vt., said many celebrity sports figures perform their own little rituals in hopes of bettering their performance on the field.
"It's just like a lot of Italians who throw salt over their shoulder for luck," added Nick Porcella, a 19-year-old Needham resident studying English and philosophy.
Ms. Kinney-Landis said that most read horoscopes or take part in superstitious practices for fun.
But Mr. Caro said he wasn't too sure.
"Unfortunately, too many people take these things seriously and they act like placebos. Spirituality overall gives one a false sense of hope and that can be harmful to the individual," said Mr. Caro, who admitted that he tries to avoid stepping on sidewalk lines.
