Legislative Advocate - Washington, DC

Under the general direction of the Director of Public Policy, working from our Silver Springs office, the Legislative Advocate’s primary focus will be to advance our organization’s objectives through the union’s legislative program. This includes but is not limited to execution and evaluation of NNU’s legislative program, organizing membership involvement, and specifically promoting our agenda through the governmental and regulatory processes with testimony, and lobbying. This is a unique and exciting opportunity for the right person to make a real difference for healthcare justice.

 

 

Essential Requirements:

 

Demonstrated ability to independently execute federal legislative campaigns

•          Highly evolved communications skills

•          Ability to build relationships with potential allies

 

Preferred Experience:

 

•          Bachelor of Arts

•          5+ years of professional experience in the field of legislative and union advocacy

•          2+ years of professional experience working in the labor movement

•          2+ years lobbying experience

•          Demonstrated written and analytical skills

•          Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of governmental relations and related issues

•          Experience in a public role as a social advocate

•          Demonstrated familiarity with healthcare issues

REGULATORY/POLICY SPECIALIST

National Nurses United, through its assertive stance on protecting nursing practice and patient advocacy has gained a national reputation as a leader in the fight against the corporatization of healthcare.

 

The Regulatory/Policy Specialist’s primarily focus will be to advance our organizations nursing practice and patient advocacy policies through the governmental and regulatory processes with research, written documentation, testimony, and lobbying.

 

Duties include but not limited to, research with emphasis on health and nursing policy development; technical interpretation/analysis and assessment of proposed government agency regulations for potential impact on nursing and health care; monitoring of governmental agencies; attendance as NNU representative at designated meetings of relevant state and federal agencies, boards, and commissions; act as resource to NNU members and staff on regulatory and policy issues; assist with development of NNU response to various and selected legislative issues; ability to articulate, defend and advance our positions to members of congress and federal/state governmental agencies; and preparation of reports to staff and membership on regulatory issues and activities.

 

Minimum Requirements:

· Bachelor’s degree

· Experience in regulatory/policy advocacy

· Demonstrated written and analytical skills

· Experience in public role as a social advocate

· Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice

 

Preferred:

· Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of nursing practice, patient advocacy and related issues

· Experience in Nursing with professional experience in acute care settings

· Law Degree or advanced degree in public policy

Political Organizer (Washington, DC)

Under the general direction of the Political Director, the Political Organizer plans and assists in Union activities and achievement of Union objectives by means of governmental advocacy, grassroots education, community organizing and organizing member involvement. The office is in Silver Spring, MD. Participates in the evaluation and planning of the Union’s legislative and political action programs. Extensive experience with lobbying, member involvement, organizing, political action and legislative advocacy required.
