COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Putnam County commission has voted to allow the phrase, "In God We Trust," to hang over the county courthouse.
On Monday Putnam County Commissioner Marsha Bowan said she will vote on an issue that is not only close to the hearts of her constituents-- but her own life struggles.
"I have a son who is in the military and he has been deployed 5 times; we're waiting his sixth deployment, and God is who I have entrusted in to bring him home to us each time," said Bowan.
"There is no way I could vote against this with the battles I have been through in my personal life, knowing that he has brought me through all of this," said Bowan.
Al Gaspard, pastor of Colonial View Baptist Church where the idea originated said, "we just came up with the idea that since this is on our currency and the courthouse is the hub center where our leaders are our money comes in, we decided since it is a national motto, why not put it on the courthouse?"
The phrase would be place above four entrances to the courthouse in the center of the Cookeville
"We just believe we have rights and we're determined to express those to the whole world, if they listen," said Gaspard.
The pastor also says, "We're not going to ask the taxpayers to put up one dime. We'll get it done if it passes and we hope it does."
