Ms. Neslény studied at the Béla Bartók Conservatory and at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. She came to the United States after the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. After a year of recovery from the illness she contracted in the freedom fight, she polished her piano artistry with Rosina Lhevinne. She also holds a degree in Library Science.

Ms. Neslény is known in the Southland as a pianist, teacher and organist. She held positions at the piano faculties at California State University, Los Angeles and at Pasadena City College (1974 -1986).

She performed on four continents and she was Guest Artist with the Princess Luxury Liner. Her name appears in the Who’s Who of Women and Musicians of the World and other encyclopedias.

As a composer, Neslény’s “Magyar Requiem” was premiered in 1994 at the Liszt Academy of Music’s Grand Hall, and, in 2006 her “Cantata 1956” earned her the highest award a civilian may receive from the President of the Hungarian Republic for “artistic contributions and promoting music in the 20th Century, especially the works of Franz Liszt.”

She also holds commendations from the Mayors of Los Angeles and Pasadena and was knighted by the Order of Saint Laszlo for her humanitarian and philanthropic commitments.

She is invited as pianist, lecturer, and presenter in musical circles. Her pianistic renditions are recorded by Globe, Janus and Summitt. Her articles, reviews and novelettes appear around the world.

She teaches piano and compositions in Pasadena and is a former president of the Music Teachers’ Association of Pasadena and since 1990 co-director of the Los Angeles International Liszt Competition for Piano and Voice with Geraldine Keeling.

Recently she was invited by the Liszt Academy of Music to present recitals and Master Classes in Budapest.

Welcoming Remarks:

Clarissa Martinez De Castro, Director, Immigration and National Campaigns, National Council of La Raza

In the aftermath of the presidential election, much has been said on how President Obama got to the 270 electoral votes needed for his reelection. In 2011 and 2012, the Center for American Progress' Ruy Teixeira and John Halpin correctly predicted that two large forces would determine the outcome of the election: the objective reality and voter perception of the economy in key battleground states and the shifting demographic balance of the American electorate. In the end, with growing concern about the economy, the rising electorate of communities of color, the Millennial generation, professionals, single women and secular voters once again came together to push President Obama to victory.

But what happens now? Can this coalition be sustained beyond every four years? What can both sides of the aisle learn from the how and why of voter turnout? And what policy agenda will this new coalition push forward? Please join the Center for American Progress for a discussion looking back on what happened on November 6, and looking forward to 2013.
