A Requiem for Black Bodies is a contemporary urban production in

remembrance of Black people traumatized by racism and violence in the United States.

Our aim is to sit with this historical and ongoing trauma inflicted upon Black people in America and move to a state of reflection, healing, and action through imagery, music, spoken word, dance, meditation and ritual. The Requiem is in four parts: the lament, the silence, the healing, and the activism.

A Requiem for Black Bodies is created and directed by Dr. Renee K. Harrison, professor of African American and U.S. Religious History at Howard University School of Divinity. There will be a talkback after each performance.

District Playback Theater Ensemble

Can we tell each other the truth? And if not THE truth, can we each tell our own truth? In a Playback Theater performance that is what we seek to do: open up a hallowed space where our neighbors, can – by sharing their personal stories – tell the truth about their lives and the life of our neighborhood and our country.

You tell your story and these actors, who have been especially trained to do this, will turn your story into a short, one-act play or scene.

Anacostia and the whole of DC continues to change, COVID has forced some changes, and all of our relationships continue to evolve. What have you held on to? What have you had to let go? What do you do that allows you to continue to wake up every morning and keep going?

We're ready to Play your story Back to you. Our only question is: Where does your story begin?

Tickets are $25
