LCV is hiring an Advocacy Director for Judiciary & Democracy who will work closely with senior leadership on the government affairs and Democracy for All teams on LCV’s federal advocacy for democracy issues, including the passage of S1/HR1, HR51 and HR4, and judicial nominations. The ideal candidate has experience with government affairs and policymaking around democracy issues and/or judicial nominations, is highly organized, has strong attention to detail, can represent the organization on the Hill, with the administration and in coalition efforts, is adept at relationship building and committed to advancing racial justice and equity as part of all of our efforts.

 

Responsibilities:

• Work closely with senior members of the Government Affairs team and help play a leading role across departments in our Democracy for All campaign on LCV’s federal advocacy for democracy issues, including the passage of S1/HR1, HR51 and HR4, and judicial nominations.
• Educate decision-makers about the impact of the courts on the environment, public health, environmental justice, and voting rights and access to democracy, and on the need for a judiciary that reflects the racial and gender diversity of our country.
• Educate decision-makers on the importance of expanding access to the ballot and protecting voting rights for all people in this country and opposing racially discriminatory voting restrictions, such as voter identification laws.
• Work closely across departments to engage LCV’s members, state affiliates, donors, and to generate earned media coverage about judicial nominees and democracy issues.
• Research and produce written content on nominees and their impact on environmental, democracy, and racial justice issues.
• Participate in federal democracy and judicial nominations coalitions.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

• Work Experience: Required - At least five years of experience working on Capitol Hill, in the executive branch, or in an advocacy or political organization in campaigns, issue advocacy, government or related work. Preferred - JD degree from an accredited law school.
• Skills: Excellent writing, editing, and oral communication skills, including making public presentations. Well-organized; hard-working; thorough and detail-oriented; strong research and critical thinking skills; able to manage multiple-tasks at once and work across departments to achieve shared goals; thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment; exhibits a professional demeanor and able to maintain confidentiality; demonstrated relationship building skills. Successful experience working with teams representing a rich mix of talent, backgrounds, and perspectives. A sense of teamwork and community, collaborative with an ability to work closely with a diverse set of allies, ability to handle multiple tasks, work with several people simultaneously and thrive in a fast paced setting. • Working Conditions: This job operates in a professional office environment, and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and audiovisual systems. This position is largely sedentary, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods. The person in this position frequently communicates with partners and elected representatives and must be able to exchange accurate information. This position is based in Washington, DC. Travel will be required for meetings with elected officials and their staff, and related events, as well as staff retreats and conferences as needed.  Please note that all LCV staff are currently working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
