Title: Racial Justice and Equity Intern

Department: Executive Office

Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Chief Officer for Racial Justice and Equity

Location: Flexible

Duration: 12 Weeks - May to August 2021 (start and end dates flexible)

Schedule and Compensation: 40 hours per week; $15.00 per hour

LCV is seeking a Racial Justice and Equity Intern who will support the Chief Officer for Racial Justice and Equity in aligning our individual, departmental, and the Racial Justice & Equity Working Group's work plans with LCV's strategic plan. The internship will provide our Racial Justice and Equity Intern with opportunities to develop a broad understanding of LCV's efforts to center Racial Justice & Equity in all of our work and how such efforts might be used to help any organization become a more equitable, inclusive, and effective workplace. Special projects include writing a draft report on LCV's Racial Justice and Equity work over the past 6 years, supporting the Learning, Education, and Growth Opportunities (L.E.G.O.) League plan learning solutions to foster a culture of learning across the organization, and cataloguing our Racial Justice and Equity Resource Library.

The Racial Justice and Equity Intern will join a cohort of LCV interns. Summer interns participate in brown bag lunches with various members of LCV's senior management team, including President Gene Karpinski.

Intern Will Gain Experience in:

  • Collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data across the organization;
  • Creating organizational assessment tools designed to evaluate LCV's progress on Racial Justice and Equity;
  • Researching the history of the conservation, environmental, and environmental movements;
  • Developing organizational change management skills centered in principles of Racial Justice and Equity;
  • Creating and implementing Learning and Professional Development for a complex organization.

Qualifications:

  • Work Experience: 6 months administrative support work, including internship experience preferred.
  • Skills: Highly organized; strong attention to detail; excellent written and oral communications skills; strong research skills; exhibits solid judgment; critical thinking skills; able to work independently and as a team; able to handle multiple tasks; self-starter; proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite. Knowledge of history of race relations within the U.S. preferred.
  • Cultural Competence: Shares our commitment to increasing racial diversity and inclusion in our movement and organization, integrating racial justice and equity into the work we do, and ensuring an inclusive organizational culture. Commitment to environmental protection and mission of LCV.
  • Conditions: The location of this position is flexible. Please note that all LCV staff and interns are currently working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Title: Youth Digital Organizing Campaigns Intern

Department: Campaigns

Reports to: Youth Digital Campaigns Manager

Core to that work is ensuring that racial justice and equity is centered in all of the work that we do to ensure that those most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis – often communities of color, Indigenous communities, and low-income communities – are at the forefront of solutions.

LCV is seeking a Youth Digital Organizing Intern who will support the Youth Digital Campaigns Manager in developing and implementing digital advocacy and organizing campaigns to engage and empower youth climate activists. The Campaigns department directs LCV's federal electoral and issue campaign efforts. The Youth Digital Organizing Intern will support the digital organizing and advocacy in our climate organizing program across the country and learn how to digitally build and empower a powerful activist base that advocates for just and equitable solutions to the climate crisis. Special projects include supporting the creation of digital ads, engaging youth climate activists through peer-to-peer texting and mobilizing activists to take action, strengthening Climate Action's social media presence, and cultivating stories of climate action. 

The Youth Digital Organizing Intern will join a cohort of LCV interns. Summer interns participate in brown bag lunches with various members of LCV's senior management team, including President Gene Karpinski.

Intern Will Gain Experience in:

  • Building grassroots advocacy through digital organizing. The intern will help our Climate Action program's with digital organizing and grassroots advocacy engagement by engaging with our youth members to continue to build the youth climate movement and advance climate justice. The intern will have the opportunity to use digital tools including Mobilize and peer to peer texting tools like Hustle.
  • Developing digital storytelling. The intern will play a critical role in developing stories of climate action organizing and highlight how climate change and systemic racism disproportionately harm and impact black, Latinx, Indigenous and other communities of color.  They will work with the Storytelling team to help identify Climate Action youth volunteers to share their story on LCV's digital platform and develop stories that can be featured in blogs, emails, and social media.
  • Supporting digital acquisition. The intern will assist in digital acquisition through developing innovative digital ad creative for our youth acquisition program and building digital brand affinity for our Climate Action program.
  • Drafting social media guidance. The intern will help develop social media toolkits for climate action including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter guidance to build Climate Action's digital presence, better cultivate our online members, as well as organize around key climate organizing moments.
  • Advancing climate and environmental justice. The intern will center racial justice and equity in all of our digital organizing and social media guidance to ensure that we fight for just and equitable climate solutions. The intern will also help create a digital resource library of environmental and climate justice organizing resources.
  • Other duties as assigned.
