Communications Manager, Enough Project at the Center for American Progress

Reports to: Director of Communications, Enough Project

Position classification: Full time, exempt

Summary:
Enough is a project of the Center for American Progress to end genocide and crimes against humanity. Founded in 2007, Enough focuses primarily on crises in Sudan, South Sudan, eastern Congo, and areas of Africa affected by the Lord's Resistance Army. The Enough Project's strategy papers and briefings provide sharp field analysis and targeted policy recommendations based on a strategy of promoting durable peace, providing civilian protection, and supporting accountability for perpetrators of atrocities. Enough works with concerned citizens, advocates, and policymakers to prevent, mitigate, and resolve these crises by both raising awareness domestically and pressuring lawmakers and policymakers.

The Communications Manager will be responsible for helping manage relations with new and traditional media, create and implement advanced communication and media strategies, and monitor and evaluate earned media. The successful candidate will create and maintain strong relationships with the press and nontraditional media, and draft, pitch, and distribute press releases, op-ed submissions, and alerts highlighting Enough.

Further, the Communications Manager will manage the portions of Enough's website designed for news media and will work with Enough's web team to effectively create web content highlighting interviews, videos, blogs, op-eds, and publications. This position requires at least three years of press, media, or public policy communications experience and strong management and interpersonal skills. This individual will play a key role in coordinating Enough's dynamic media contacts and web presence.

Responsibilities:

Raise awareness of the Enough Project through a variety of media; maximize effectiveness of outreach to electronic, print, and new media; and widen Enough product distribution and knowledge of Enough.
Work directly with the Director of Communications, the Director of Content, and the Director of Online Communications to develop media products and an overarching media strategy to support both the Enough brand and Enough's associated campaigns.
Help draft communications plans for each of Enough's policy reports to maximize the effectiveness of Enough's work in policy and advocacy.
Work to create and continue lasting relationships with high-profile media, especially wire service reporters; State Department, White House, and United Nations reporters; and media located in Africa.
Place high-profile op-eds, features, blog posts, videos or other materials.
Pitch broadcast producers, print editors and reporters, and continuously develop new media contacts and manage media lists for the organization.
Requirements and qualifications:

At least three years experience as a nonprofit or public policy communications professional, preferably with a background in human rights or international affairs.
Bachelor's degree. A degree in journalism, international relations, political science, or a related field is a plus.
Fast writer with a nose for news and an agile ability to respond rapidly to breaking news.
Demonstrated ability to manage strategic and creative, multichannel media campaigns on deadline and under pressure.
Ability to develop concrete media strategies, including the drafting and editing of press releases, opinion pieces, letters to the editor, fact sheets, and other communications materials.
Personable, flexible team player with a network of personal contacts in the media and an ability to pitch stories to journalists and bloggers.
Ability to maintain relationships with journalists at targeted print, broadcast, and online media outlets and blogs; organize press briefings, editorial board meetings and other informational sessions with reporters.
Ability to identify stories in Enough Project's field reports and policy papers and translate them into effective communications that can be shared with the media.
Superb organization skills, including the ability to manage numerous tasks simultaneously.
Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication, including copyediting and proofreading skills.
Ability to demonstrate the ROI of Enough's media relations and public relations efforts by tracking results and sharing successes.
Knowledge of social media, including Twitter and Facebook, in today's media landscape, and understanding of the role of blogs in public policy discourse.
