(Career Progress) HIRING: Director of Digital Strategy, Community Change

Community Change builds the power and capacity of low-income people, especially low-income people of color, to lead powerful and dynamic movements for social change. With our community-based partner groups, we bridge the grassroots and the national, supporting outsider strategies to disrupt the status quo while also building pathways to influence the insider conversation. 

Our vision of a better world centers the leadership of impacted people of color to move our work on immigrant rights, economic justice, and racial equity, including a focus on jobs and housing, early childhood care and education, income supports, and immigration reform.

This position also supports Community Change Action, an affiliated 501(c)(4) advocacy organization. While motivated by the same core values – equity, inclusion, and justice – Community Change and Community Change Action operate independently of one another and each organization has its own board of directors.

Position Description: 

Community Change, one of the nation's leaders in the fight for progressive change seeks a dynamic change maker to lead our digital strategy. This position is an exciting and unique combination in the field. The right person will be one part digital marketing expert, one part media technology strategist, and one part seasoned digital organizer. The Director of Digital Strategy oversees the digital projects and properties of the Community Change and Community Change Action. This position's primary responsibility is to guide digital strategy for our organization, our brands and our constantly evolving experiments in fusing traditional and digital organizing practices. You will be called upon to partner with senior organizers at Community Change/Action to change the equation by radically increasing the size and impact of our communities of activists and followers. This position has overall responsibility for assuring our websites and other properties tell the story of our work as well as the people and organizations with whom we organize. Finally, you will be part of an enterprising team of communicators and organizers who will look to your creativity as well as best practice guidance; leadership as well as a hands-on can do spirit; and the ability to handle the competing demands of a shifting political landscape with poise and determination.

The Director of Digital Strategy reports to the Director of Public Affairs while partnering with a variety of teams across Community Change and Community Change Action.

A successful candidate will have a background in marketing and political advocacy, and a commitment to social, racial, and economic justice.

Principal Responsibilities: 

  • Advance and manage a team of digital staff and vendors to execute integrated digital marketing and organizing strategies across text messaging, email, social media, constituent relationship management, web CMS, digital advertising that facilitates building new power and community at scale to win a governing agenda for low-income families and people of color. 

  • Manage and implement innovative strategies across integrated digital technology and platforms to build Community Change's audience, brand and advance progressive narratives.

  • Work with organizing teams to develop strategies that combine the power of both traditional organizing and digital organizing to bring new people into the movement and increase Community Change/Action and our grassroot partners' power.

  • Develop strategies and digital tactics to build power for low-income communities and communities of color, uplift the Community Change/Action brand and drive narrative change to win on our issues.  

  • Be a leading technology advisor to Community Change as a whole and play an active role in Community Change's commitment to integrating data and technology into our work and culture as part of our Data and Technology Change Initiative. 

  • Creatively experiment and rigorously track outcomes and learnings to improve performance of Community Change's digital actions and impact over time.

  • Develop and oversee Community Change's strategy with respect to social media networks, including paid digital advertising.

  • Assist in the development of rapid-response campaigns in collaboration with other communications and campaign staff in order to translate rapid-response moments into larger organizational strategies.

  • Develop and maintain relationships in the progressive digital and technology landscape to increase visibility on Community Change's work and learn from others in the space.

  • Work closely with the communications team on developing digital-first content and messages.

  • Oversee and manage project budgets to ensure legal compliance and deliver projects on budget.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

  • Commitment to economic, racial, and immigrant justice.

  • The ideal candidate will have 6+ years' work experience in a professional setting; varied backgrounds in non-profit administration, digital strategies, political advocacy and/or organizing.

  • Strong writing skills including the ability to produce short, punchy external facing content as well deep, inward facing strategy memos.

  • Excellent non-verbal and public speaking skills including the ability to represent the Community Change in front of small and large gatherings.

  • Demonstrated work experience with advertising and managing the strategy and execution of large digital advertising campaigns.

  • Experience creating strategic plans and developing performance metrics to achieve set goals.

  • Strong knowledge of digital and social media trends and leveraging knowledge to build integrated campaigns to advance larger goals.

  • Demonstrated project management experience with background in managing six figure budgets.

  • Strong creative instincts and a willingness to experiment with new projects and ideas.

  • Ability to balance and prioritize different projects.

  • Ability to work with and manage a diverse teams, stakeholders and partners to move work and meet project goals. 

  • Content production skills such as web design, graphic design, and video editing skills are a plus.

  • Experience with WordPress.

  • Experience with digital technology platforms such as  EveryAction, broadcast and peer-to-peer texting platforms, social media management, CRM/CMS platforms, email marketing tools  and/or other mobile communications software/platforms.

  • Organizing experience in some capacity is a plus.

This position reports to: Director of Public Affairs

Supervisory Responsibility: This is a management position with supervisory responsibility.

Classification: Community Change recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is not included in Community Change's bargaining unit therefore not covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Travel Requirements:  Due to COVID-19 and Community Change policy, there will be no travel through the end of 2021. Pending the lift of the travel restriction, this position would require regular visits to field partners and for convenings throughout the United States. On average, one can expect to travel 2-4 weeks per year.

Salary & Benefits: Starting annual salary range of $110K. Community Change offers a competitive salary based on qualifications and an excellent benefits package, which includes four weeks of vacation; paid leave between December 24 and January 1; 3% employer contribution to 401k plan at time of hire and an additional 5% at six months of employment (8% employer contribution); and a choice of health insurance plans.

Position Location: Flexible, Washington, DC strongly preferred.
