Color Of Change is the nation's largest online racial justice organization. As a national online force driven by over one million members, we help people respond effectively to injustice in the world around us, moving decision-makers in corporations and government to create a more human and less hostile world for Black people in America. We activate our members to take action on crucial issues—from criminal justice to media representations to the social safety net and voter freedom—so that we can build the power necessary to transform the written and unwritten rules of society.
ROLE SUMMARY
Color Of Change is hiring a full-time Senior Program Manager in New York City or Washington, DC. The Senior Program Manager will be charged with developing short and long-term narrative and communications strategies and launching them into powerful campaigns that work to make a change in the daily lives of Black people.
This position is ideal for strong writers and visual communicators with experience with digital campaigning and/or strategic communications, a track record of crafting compelling messages that move target audiences, and a strong understanding of racial and criminal justice issues. The right candidate will be committed to getting results in a fast-paced environment and able to handle competing priorities. This position reports directly to the Deputy Senior Director for Criminal Justice Campaigns and will work closely with team members throughout the organization to achieve Color Of Change's mission.
RESPONSIBILITIES: To succeed as a Senior Program Manager, we've identified four areas of responsibility -- grouped into Campaigns, Communications, Technology, and Management.
Programs and Campaigns
- Own development of multimedia rapid response interventions to support criminal justice campaigns. With the support of the Deputy Senior Campaigns Director, develop strategies with strong theories of change, using both proven and experimental online and offline tactics including web, video, graphic design, and traditional media to create cultural campaigns that pressure targets and organize individuals to win real-world change.
- Iterate. Constantly revise your plans in response to real-world developments - both internally and externally. Solicit input from team members and partners to create a process for implementing campaigns. Flexibility is your middle name.
- Execute your strategic plans. Manage external consultants, build relationships with movement partners, and be able to work well within an interdependent team structure in order to drive rapid response and long-term communications and multimedia campaigns.
- Be Responsive. We are a racial justice organization that must remain consistently responsive to the news cycle and what's happening in the world. As such, this is not a standard 9-5 job and as part of your role, you may be called on to work early mornings, evenings, late nights, and weekends when moments break.
- Evaluate. Is it working? Rigorously analyze data, report out on the impact of our campaigns and learn, learn, learn.
Communications
- Write. Create powerful, persuasive, and poppy emails, op-eds, text messages, press releases, etc. under a deadline. If the pen is mightier than the sword, your pen must be mighty indeed.
- Make headlines. Have the skills and instincts to make campaigns newsworthy and generate press coverage to help them win.
- Sum it up. Quickly synthesize information and communicate it back out to multiple audiences – members, staff, allies, etc.
- Conscious, not colorblind. Despite the trendiness of terms like "colorblind," "personal responsibility" and "post-racial," you understand that Black people face systemic barriers to opportunity and you're up for the challenge of re-educating the masses.
- Stay on message.
Technology
- Innovate. Experiment with creative ways of leveraging technology to make good things happen, and know-how to measure what "good" means. Consult with Color Of Change's Technology Team and other external technology consultants to build engaging online tools for our members.
Management
- Manage relationships with service providers, vendors, consultants, and other contractors as necessary to successfully execute your strategies.
QUALIFICATIONS
In this role and organization, strategic thinking and writing ability are paramount. While experience in a similar role in the civil rights sector is not required, experience in communications and a commitment to civil rights and racial justice is. A qualified candidate should have:
- 3+ years of experience in strategic communications work.
- Exceptional writing skills. The ability to communicate information clearly is fundamental to this role. You will be asked to draft campaign and program materials, edit others, and communicate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to develop campaign assets.
- Exceptional communication skills. The ability to clearly communicate with the staff you are working with within the organization as well as external partners, consultants, and media is paramount; especially in fast-faced moments, you'll need to be on message, clear and ask for clarity in return.
- A deep racial justice analysis and a strong ability to effectively use a Black/racial justice frame of reference to write compelling copy for campaign-related documents and other engagement materials.
- An entrepreneurial spirit. This ambitious drive is necessary for owning the work in your issue area and should also be combined with the ability to be creative and work quickly.
- Top-notch organization skills. If the books on your bookshelf are in alphabetical order, your notes utilize colors with specific meanings, and you find long to-do lists energizing, we want to talk to you! There's a lot to keep track of in this role, and nothing can fall through the cracks. Meeting quick deadlines is key.
- A commitment to confidentiality. In this role, you'll have a window into movement and organizational politics at the highest level – confidentiality is key.
- Constructive optimism. The work that we do – be it political, organizing, or creative – is all about the art of the possible. While we're looking to remedy deep structural issues, our progress comes incrementally – a series of wins, some small and some large, that help advance us closer to the systemic change we seek.
- Management skills. While management experience is not a prerequisite for this role, skills in developing talent - training, coaching, planning, delegation, and accountability will be important to development in the management part of this position.
