TEAM SUMMARY

The Finance Team is currently composed of the Senior Director of Finance, Deputy Director of Finance & Accounting, Senior Accounting Manager, Senior Budget and Accounts Receivable Manager, and a Staff Accountant. The Finance Team directs and manages the financial operations of Color Of Changes three entities, Color Of Change Education Fund, a 501(C)3 nonprofit corporation; Color Of Change, a 501(c)4 nonprofit corporation; and Color Of Change PAC, a 527 political action committee.  We interface with and support all operating departments of COC, including the Boards of Directors, senior management, staff members, and vendors. 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Staff Accountant has experience with non-profit accounting and is committed to achieving results in a fast-paced environment while managing competing priorities. This position is an excellent opportunity to be a critical problem-solver within a growing, mission-driven organization. 

This position reports directly to the Senior Budget and Accounts Receivable Manager, with a dotted reporting line to the Deputy Director of Finance and Accounting.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Staff Accountant will have the following duties and responsibilities: 

  • Track and report individual program expenditures & income
  • Prepare and process salary allocation changes
    • Update salary allocations within COC's timekeeping system
  • Prepare budget proposals, modifications, and renewal budgets
  • Prepare financial reports for funding sources
    • Update monthly grant internal worksheet
    • Reconcile against the general ledger and prepare adjusting entries
  • Conduct monthly budget review in order to effectively manage the financial activities of each grant
  • Prepare budget analysis and projections for grants
  • Assist with the monthly close process
  • Prepare grant variance information for variance meetings
  • Assist with accounts receivable and other finance-related functions including accounts payable. 
  • Provide donor customer service to resolve issues expeditiously.
  • Assist with balance sheet account reconciliations 
  • Maintain a digital filing system to keep information easily accessible.
  • Assist the Senior Budget and Accounts Receivable Manager on projects and administration as needed.
  • Perform with a high degree of accuracy, attention to detail and integrity 
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills - both verbal and written.
  • Use effective organization and time management skills.
  • Apply strong judgment & critical thinking skills consistently.
  • Train and assist both Finance team members and COC colleagues to accurately code expenses and learn updated Finance/Accounting tools and processes.
  • Additional duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS

In this role, discretion, organizational, and people skills are paramount. While experience in a similar role in the civil rights sector is not required, a commitment to civil rights and racial justice is.

You should have:

  • 3-5 years of work experience in accounting in a non-profit organization is highly desirable
  • Understanding of GAAP required, especially not-for-profit accounting principles.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to develop and communicate effectively with people at various levels of the organization
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills– must be able to work effectively under pressure, handle multiple tasks/demands simultaneously, and adapt quickly to shifting priorities
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with other Microsoft Office applications required
  • A customer-service orientation is paramount. You'll need to support our staff's ability to perform at the highest possible level. A successful candidate will be responsive but also proactive, addressing needs that staff, donors, and vendors may not even be aware of.

COMPENSATION

The salary for the Staff (Grant) Accounting position is $72,000. This is a full-time exempt position. Color Of Change also offers a competitive benefits package.
