RE: [Unicum] Cell Phone Purchase in Hungary

A bit more info. T-Mobile has unlimited landline AND cell calls to Hungary for $15/mo. In Hungary, just about everyone uses a cell phone. Of course, if you call landline, Skype is cheaper at $6.99, because that plan is $10 at T-Mobile. T-Mobile’s rate per minute is 20c, which is lower than Skype’s and you can take your phone to Hungary and use it there for 20c/minute as well (no need to get it unlocked).

Subject: Re: [Unicum] Cell Phone Purchase in Hungary

Hi all,

Now that we have this telecommunication discussion going, I was wondering if anyone has info on how to best call Hungarian cell numbers.

For calling landlines in Hungary (from the US or anywhere, even within Hungary), the best structure I found is Skype's monthly subscription of unlimited calls to Hungarian landlines for $6.99/month - it works for our family and business but since Skype is now Microsoft, compatibility with Apple products or consistent quality of calls seems to be less supported (like access to Contacts, etc.)

(By the way, Skype also has a subscription for unlimited calls for any US/Canadian phones for $2.99/month. Expect some occasional static noise or fade-outs.)

It is nevertheless a good deal to call aunts, grandma's or organizations/businesses who have no smart phones but sure have a landline.  I even set it up for my mother living in Hungary that she can use from her computer.  You can also use this service with wifi when traveling if you have a  tablet or laptop (or smart phone, as it was pointed out before) and you don't mind to depend on wifi availability.

Unfortunately, to call Hungarian cell phones you need something else - phone card, Skype credit (26c per minute), local cell phone or whatever your choice might be.

Does anyone has a more economical suggestion for calling cell numbers?  Most of my contacts in Hungary have no smart phones so "online" service at their end is not an option at this point.

Thanks,

Erika

PS The Skype subscriptions have to be set up from a US IP-address to get these prices, if you try to do it from Europe it costs more and the plans are different, too.
