It could be lost here or in Europe. Based on prior experience, I would think MagyarPosta is the culprit but I would pursue both them and USPS.
-- Also, while I agree that another shipping method would have been preferable, that may not help recover the very valuable documents already sent. They may never be recoverable - sadly - but before I give up I think I would contact someone in the government, either at the embassy here or in government in Budapest who might have some additional ideas on how to find the lost items. Perhaps there is someone in BP whose job involves liaising with minorities and especially Holocaust survivors or the Jewish community. The person in DC who is responsible for working with the Hungarian diaspora in the US is Zita Mirk. She Is very nice and may be able to help. If you can't locate her, reach out to me directly and I will provide her contact info privately. I may also be able to connect you with a Hungarian-American friend at senior levels of USPS.

File a complaint with the headquarters of the USPS Inspector General in Washington DC. Always via certified mail with return receipt requested. If you get no satisfaction within a reasonable period of time send your complaint to the U.S. Senate Committtee having jurisdiction over postal matters as well as either—not both—your U.S. Congressman or U.S. Senator. I'd start with the Congressman.

I recently shipped a package of documents concerning the families of both my parents to the Holocaust Center on Pava utca. I sent the package on June 2 by USPS "Priority Express", which tracked the package only as far as JFK airport. The package has not arrived to date. The director of the museum has made a good faith effort to find the package but Magyar Posta claimed that they could not locate it.
Can any of you offer suggestions about further action? Have you had similar experiences?
