From on of Hungary's leading directors, János Szász, comes a fine and intense adaptation of Hungarian-Swiss Agota Kristof's moving novel about the war-time struggle of the Hungarian people. Two twin boys are taken to the countryside by their parents and left with their hostile old granny (Piroska Molnár). Given a blank notebook and told to fill it with their experiences, they quickly learn that the best way to deal with pain and hunger is to desentize themselves to everything. As the Nazis, the Holocaust and then the terrors of peace sweep through the country, the boys must walk the fine line between self-reliance and viciousness. A fine, unblinking observation of the costs of war and the price of survival.

Winner of the Crystal Globe for the Best Film at this year's Karlovy Vary Film Festival, the cinematography, by Michael Haneke's regular cameraman Christian Berger, has alos been strongly praised (Note courtesy of Adelaide Film Festival.).

Q & A with Director János Szász and Leading Actress Piroska Molnár follows the screening.
