Community Change builds the power and capacity of low-income people, especially low-income people of color, to lead powerful and dynamic movements for social change. With our community-based partner groups, we bridge the grassroots and the national, supporting outsider strategies to disrupt the status quo while also building pathways to influence the insider conversation.
Our vision of a better world centers the leadership of impacted people of color to move our work on immigrant rights, economic justice, and racial equity, including a focus on jobs and housing, early childhood care and education, income supports, and immigration reform.
This position also supports Community Change Action, an affiliated 501(c)(4) advocacy organization. While motivated by the same core values – equity, inclusion, and justice – Community Change and Community Change Action operate independently of one another and each organization has its own board of directors.
Position Description:
Community Change/Action is seeking experienced candidates to fill the position of Senior Strategic Researcher-Campaigner within the recently formed Strategic Campaigns & Strategic Research (SCSR) department that is currently coordinating and driving strategy for the Defend Black Voters Campaign in Michigan. The SCSR department undertakes special campaigns that are time-bound and tied to particular threats or opportunities that arise and is creating a program for building strategic campaigning capacity with CC/A partners.
The ideal candidate must be able to function broadly as a flexible and resourceful researcher and campaigner that can flourish in various capacities to move campaigns forward through high-level strategy development as well as driving timely execution of complex tactics within a coalition setting. They must also be able to serve as a coach and trainer to build partner capacity.
Responsibilities:
- Support CC/A partners and/or other CC/A campaign teams in the development of winning campaigns (whether policy or corporate campaigns) that build power for working class communities of color. The Senior Strategic Researcher-Campaigner facilitates improvement in strategy and implementation by working with campaign stakeholders to engage a set of tangible analytical tools, which may include: strategic research, power analysis and mapping; strategy charts; campaign calendaring for escalation and compression (and pivoting to adapt to circumstances); campaigning to build the capacities, alliances, and power necessary to win (ratcheting up); strategic messaging (public narrative, strategic messaging matrix); and campaign processes and practices to facilitate effective campaign teams.
- Be the owner/driver of particularly complex or intensive special campaigns (arising out of particular opportunities and threats) that need coordination from CC/A for multiple coalition partners.
- Execute high-level strategic research to inform campaign strategy, prioritizing research threads appropriately to be able to
- Analyze research, interpret strategic implications, and facilitate wider engagement with research in accessible processes to build out campaign strategy and increase investment across diverse campaign stakeholders.
- Constructively, diplomatically, and articulately provide reason-based feedback (ie. not opinion-based) on strategy and implementation to partners or campaign team members. Raise flags appropriately when there are issues that need to be resolved on a campaign.
- Write clear and concise campaign documents for internal and external use with sophisticated view of audience, tactical use, and campaign goals.
- Test innovative online to offline base building, mobilization and leadership development methods.
- Work closely with other CC teams to promote organizational alignment and coordination with Path to Power goals and implementation.
- Support organizational development efforts and opportunities for CC/A partners to build the capacity and expertise needed to fully participate and exercise power toward strategic campaign work.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years research and/or campaigning experience in labor or community organizing.
- Passion for Community Change's mission and legacy.
- Self-directed and proactive. Able to work independently while appropriately communicating needs, challenges, and risks to supervisor and appropriate campaign leadership.
- Excellent oral and written communicator.
- Highly proficient in qualitative and quantitative information gathering and analysis. Knows an extensive range of sources, including key sources relevant to the campaign, and can train others. When approaching a campaign with a new issue area or industry, they are able to seek out the relevant sources and tools. Or they are able to seek guidance from those with the necessary industry/issue expertise to help develop a robust research plan.
- Demonstrated ability to act as a flexible and resourceful campaigner that can drive timely execution of sophisticated tactics and help the campaign team move on a common theory to win.
- Demonstrated ability to develop a multifaceted research project from start to finish, assess the implications of research findings, and anticipate next steps.
- Strategic thinker and organizer with experience in developing and implementing successful issue campaigns.
- Experience with coalition facilitation and organizing.
- Seasoned trainer and facilitator, comfortable leading people.
- Ability to work well under tight deadlines and in a team environment.
- Experience in community or labor organizing, movement building, and leadership development.
- Commitment to innovative organizing practices and experimentation.
- Understanding of public policy, legal, and electoral levers to advance this work.
This position reports to: Director of Strategic Research and Strategic Campaigns
Classification: Community Change recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is included in Community Change's bargaining unit and covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.
COVID-19 Requirements: Community Change requires all new employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (within six weeks after the start of employment) unless a medical or religious exemption is requested and approved. An employee will be considered fully vaccinated once (i) two weeks have elapsed since after the employee has received the final dose of a primary COVID vaccine series (e.g., two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, two doses of the Moderna vaccine, or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson/Janssen vaccine) and (ii) the employee has received any booster vaccine dose currently recommended by the CDC for those in the employee's age group. Should the CDC subsequently recommend additional boosters or should an employee otherwise become newly subject to a CDC booster recommendation, an employee shall continue to be considered fully vaccinated if the employee gets the additional booster within one month of the change.

Travel Requirements: Limited travel may be required – up to 10%
Salary & benefits: $80,000 – $90,000 annual salary.
