Dear Unicum Group members!
I retired from the World Bank last year, and now I volunteer for and contribute to the Csodalámpa Alapítvány (Magic Lamp Foundation), based in Budapest.
Csodalámpa supports life-threateningly ill children who are under permanent care, by fulfilling one wish of each such child, whose family is unable to do so.
During its 17-year history, the Foundation has made close to 4000 wishes come true, bringing joy to the children and some relief and distraction from the pain associated with their illness. Research suggests that such actions also often facilitate the treatment and rehabilitation of sick children.
The wishes vary widely from tablets and smart phones to keep in touch with family and friends, as well as learn and play during extended hospital stays to meeting with extraordinary people, like Pope Francis.
Csodalámpa is a lean and transparent organization, relying on a strong network of about 150 volunteers, mostly doctors and nurses but also others from every walk of life, who work tirelessly with the core group of three staff to make small miracles happen every day of the year.
As you can imagine, the pandemic has made Csodalámpa's fundraising efforts even more difficult at a time when the sick children, whose isolation has further increased, need support most.
I would like to bring to your attention that Csodalámpa is an eligible recipient of the Charity Aid Foundation (CAF) America. U.S.-based donors can make tax-effective donations to the Foundation through CAF America that provides a tax letter to every donor, showing the full amount of their respective gift as a charitable contribution. Many U.S. companies also match the contributions of their employees in support of charitable purposes. Finally, in Hungary, one percent of the personal income tax, as you know, could be freely allocated by individuals for such purposes.
I attach a sample CAF America gift form that could be used for tax-effective contributions for Csodalámpa and also the link to the Foundation's website (https://www.csodalampa.hu/csodalampa) that provides further information about Csodalámpa and a very simple way to make a direct donation.
It would be wonderful if you could make a contribution to Csodalámpa, no matter how small it is. Please also feel free to share this message with your American friends and neighbors, the Csodalámpa website is also available in English. I would also appreciate any advice you may have on how best to reach out to other Hungarian groups living in the U.S.
With many thanks and best regards,
András
