50 éves a New York-i Magyar Ház! Kérjük Önöket, hogy segítsenek az intézmény megújulásában!

Szeretnénk megszólítani mindenkit, akinek fontos a New York-i magyar kulturális és közösségi élet, hogy támogatásával segítsen anyagi alapot teremteni a Ház fenntartásához. Célunk a Magyar Ház fizikai állapotának korszerűsítése, valamint színvonalas és változatos kulturális programok szervezése.

Jelenleg a Magyar Ház az egyik legjelentősebb magyar közösségi fenntartású intézmény a városban és a Ház működtetéséhez elengedhetetlen a közösségi összefogás és adományozás.

Kevesen tudják, hogy egy ilyen közösségi ház éves rezsiköltsége évente minimum 40-50 ezer dollár, amelyet belépő- és bérleti díjakból, illetve adományokból kell összegyűjtenünk.

The Hungarian House of New York is celebrating its 50th anniversary. We need your support to renew our community center!

We are reaching out to everybody who believes it is important to keep and preserve Hungarian culture in New York City. The Hungarian House is one of the most important institutions in the city dedicated to this goal. Our plan is to improve the physical appearance of the House that are critical to be able to present future programming in an appropriate manner.

You might be surprised that such a community center's annual overhead costs are at least 50 thousand dollars, which we have to collect through entrance and rental fees and donations.

Just a point to highlight from you posting:  "in most cases". Since I'm also a State Department certified translator in the DC area for over 15 years and a Hungarian Embassy listed notary I agree with almost your entire statement. 

I also translated hundreds of documents, dealt with interesting cases (documents for a death row inmate wanted become a Hungarian citizen before it was too late; countless legal documents; family cookbooks; hundreds of handwritten letters found in a box dating back to the 1940s; endless conference materials for the attending Hungarian delegations; tax records; etc.)

I just need to add couple of thoughts to it: 

During my years translating I had to deal with correcting number of "do it yourself" translations which was rejected by various authorities. In some cases the document was rejected because the original format was not followed (at least that is what I've been told).  If you do it yourself you must know how to do it and what is the correct way of doing it.  If time is of an essence you may want to go for the sure thing.  Just a suggestion based on experience.

I concur. In most cases, there is no need for "OFFICIAL" translations in the United States. I am a U.S. State-Department certified translator who has done hundreds of "official" translations in the past. If anyone says or claims that he or she can complete an "official" translation for you in the U.S. is most likely an impostor. In America, the profession of translating documents or texts is completely decentralized. Anyone can become a translator and only the skills of the translator is rated, typically by customers. In Hungary, the situation is different. The state still holds a monopoly on translations by OFFI (Országos Fordító és Fordításhitelesítő iroda), which makes it impossible for hundreds of superbly qualified translators to do business in Hungary. It is state-induced discrimination. These old communist institutions, such as OFFI and Közjegyzői Kamara (which is also a state-owned monopoly) should be banned and discontinued.   I am at your disposal if you need professional assistance in translating anything. Hungarian diploma, leckekonyv, (these may need an evaluation for equivalency, credentials and a statement from services that provide these for a fee), hazassagi, szuletesi anyakonyvi kivonat, stb. stb. do not need it for most purposes, including green card, employment and more.

Anyone can translate a document and sign in front of a notary public (UPS stores, google it for the closest one) a statement that she/he is proficient in both languages and the translation is accurate.
