(Career Progress) [JOB] Campaign Director at Color Of Change

Campaign Director (Criminal Justice Team)
New York City, Oakland, CA, or Washington, DC

ABOUT COLOR OF CHANGE

Color Of Change is the nation's largest online racial justice organization. We develop strategies to put an end to policies and practices holding Black people back while championing the solutions that move all people forward. As a national force driven by over one million members, we move decision-makers in corporations and government to create a more humane and less hostile world for Black people in America. In 2005, Color Of Change was founded in response to the realization that during the Hurricane Katrina crisis, no one was afraid to disappoint Black people. There were no consequences for Black people being left stranded on their roofs to die, nor was there sufficient infrastructure among Black communities to aggregate our power and demand them for those that perpetuated or refused to acknowledge the tragic injustice. Color Of Change is impacting lives by introducing accountability into the systems of decision-making. We leverage emerging technologies and our media savvy and sharp focus to build the power it takes to move decision-makers in corporations, media, and government to drive meaningful change for Black people in service of ending injustice for all oppressed groups.

ROLE SUMMARY

Color Of Change is hiring a Campaign Director to join our Criminal Justice Team.  This position is ideal for strong writers and communicators with strategic insight and previous digital campaigning and/or communications experience, as well as expertise in various criminal justice issues/policies. The right candidate will be committed to getting results in a fast-paced environment and be able to handle competing priorities. Campaign Directors are charged with managing a team of Campaign Managers to develop short and long-term strategies and launch them into powerful campaigns that work to make a change in the daily lives of Black people. This position reports directly to the Senior Campaign Director of the department and will work closely with team members throughout the organization to achieve Color Of Change's mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES: To succeed as a Campaign Director, we've identified four areas of responsibility -- grouped into Campaigns, Technology, Communications, and Management.

Program & Campaigns

  • Own development of a strong strategic plan for your issue(s).With the support of the Senior Campaign Director, develop a campaign strategy with strong theories of change, using both proven and experimental online and offline tactics, to design campaigns that pressure targets to win real-world change.
  • Constantly revise your plans in response to real-world developments - both internally and externally. Solicit input from team members and partners to create a process for implementing campaigns. Flexibility is your middle name.
  • Execute your campaign plans. Oversee a team of staffers and external consultants, build relationships with movement partners, and be able to work well within an interdependent team structure in order to drive rapid response and long-term campaigns.
  • Be Responsive. We are a racial justice organization that must remain consistently responsive to the news cycle and what's happening in the world. As such, this is not a standard 9-5 job and as part of your role, you may be called on to work early mornings, evenings, late nights, and weekends when moments break.
  • Speak Publicly. Be an effective public ambassador for Color Of Change - whether it's for media, funders, and/or members, the person is capable of presenting a strong personal narrative of their relationship to this work, as well as talking about the vision and work of Color Of Change in a way that is aligned with organizational talking points.
  • Is it working? Rigorously analyze data, report out on the impact of our campaigns and learn, learn, learn.
  • Participate actively in your department team, on the Campaigns Team and as a part of the overall COC leadership to share responsibility in developing an inclusive, learning-based culture that centers campaigns to make real-world change in the lives of Black people.
  • Develop Program. Works with Senior Campaign Director and Deputy Senior Campaign Director to develop departmental strategies and programs for fundraising efforts.

Technology

  • Experiment with creative ways of leveraging technology to make good things happen, and know-how to measure what "good" means. Consult with Color Of Change's Technology team and other external technology consultants to build engaging online tools for our members.
  • Use our tools. Adeptly use our suite of online organizing tools (ActionKit, Share Progress, Falcon) to stage email blasts, landing pages, donation pages, social media content, etc. Use tools like VAN, Catalyst, etc. Basic familiarity with HTML and social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

Communications

  • Create powerful, persuasive, and poppy emails, op-eds, text messages, press releases, etc. under a deadline. If the pen is mightier than the sword, your pen must be mighty indeed.
  • Make headlines. Have the skills and instincts to make campaigns newsworthy and generate press coverage to help them win.
  • Sum it up. Quickly synthesize information and communicate it back out to multiple audiences – members, staff, allies, etc.
  • Conscious, not colorblind. Despite the trendiness of terms like "colorblind," "personal responsibility" and "post-racial," you understand that Black people face systemic barriers to opportunity and you're up for the challenge of re-educating the masses.
  • Stay on message.

Management

  • Manage staff to achieve program and campaign goals, as well as to develop their leadership through practice.
  • Manage relationships with service providers, vendors, consultants, and other contractors as necessary to successfully execute on your campaign strategy.

QUALIFICATIONS

In this role and organization, strategic thinking and writing ability are paramount. While experience in a similar role in the civil rights sector is not required, experience in communications and a commitment to civil rights and racial justice is. A qualified candidate should have:

  • 3+ years of experience in digital campaigns and/or communications work.
  • Exceptional writing skills. The ability to communicate information clearly is fundamental to this role. You will be asked to draft campaign documents, edit others, and communicate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to develop campaign assets.
  • Exceptional communication skills. The ability to clearly communicate with the staff you are working within the organization as well as external partners, consultants, and media are paramount; especially in fast-paced moments, you'll need to be on message, clear and ask for clarity in return.
  • A deep racial justice analysis and a strong ability to effectively use a Black/racial justice frame of reference to write strong and persuasive campaigns and/or other engagement materials.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit. This ambitious drive is necessary for owing the work in your issue area and should also be combined with the ability to be creative and work quickly.
  • Top-notch organization skills. If the books on your bookshelf are in alphabetical order, your notes utilize colors with specific meanings, and you find long to-do lists energizing, we want to talk to you! There's a lot to keep track of in this role, and nothing can fall through the cracks. Meeting quick deadlines is key.
  • A commitment to confidentiality. In this role, you'll have a window into movement and organizational politics at the highest level – confidentiality is key.
  • Constructive optimism. The work that we do – be it political, organizing, or creative – is all about the art of the possible. While we're looking to remedy deep structural issues, our progress comes incrementally – a series of wins, some small and some large, that help advance us closer to the systemic change we seek.
  • Management skills. While management experience is not a prerequisite for this role, skills in developing talent -  training, coaching, planning, delegation, and accountability will be important to development in the management part of this position.

[Unicum] PAINTING FOR SALE by a WORLD-RENOWNED HUNGARIAN PAINTER

Hi, Everyone...Hungarians and Hungarophiles alike!

I'm posting for a fellow UNICUM member, Henry Hettger,  who doesn't have a computer. (Lucky fellow. And I don't mean that sarcastically LOL.) He's selling a framed Neogrady (the father; the name of the son, likewise a world-renowned painter, was Laszlo Neogrady) oil painting for $500 USD. (There's a similar Antal Neogrady village scene discounted on eBay for twice the price Henry is selling his for so to me it sounds like a steal, not just a deal.) It's a charming little tableau of a lady in a bright red kerchief, her husband working in the garden and two little chickens watching him. (There might be a little piggy in the left foreground but I can't tell.)

Antal Neogrady (1861-1942) is a world-renowned painter whose works hang in many galleries throughout the world. This particular work has been in Henry's family since 1939 when his father bought it and it's been displayed in their family's smoke-free environment all this time. Henry is retired and downsizing.

You're encouraged to view this painting at the Hettger home. The photograph was taken in poor lighting with a cellular phone's camera plus it doesn't have good resolution or color which obscures the details and makes it impossible to judge if you'd like it or not based solely on the pictures.

I came across a posting some time ago by the OREGON STATE HOSPITAL in Salem, Oregon  which stated that they are holding the cremated remains of over 3,500 people who died between 1914 and the 1970s because there is no record of relatives who could claim these ladies and gentlemen.

Being the relentless researcher that I am, LOL, I looked at every single one of the 3,500-plus names to see if there were any Hungarians on the list. The sole Hungarian name I found is listed as

"BEREGSZAZI    JOE   [alternate first name GEORGE]   (no date of birth listed)  7/29/1920 date of death"

It broke my heart that poor Mr. Beregszazi had no one to claim him for 80 years so I'm posting this on UNICUM. His relatives could be in Hungary or they might be living in the United States.

The Hospital wants to return the remains to family members but if poor Mr. Beregszazi has no relatives then I hope a friend would qualify. It would be nice if he could go home to the city or village in Hungary where he was born.

Now even though I checked each of the 3,500+ names I could only look for Hungarian names. Some of us never had Hungarian names or we lost our Hungarian surname by marriage so it's important that people check for their non-Hungarian surnamed American émigré relatives in case they lost track of a relative. Furthermore, just because you know a relative emigrated to a certain state in the USA doesn't mean that person stayed there. He or she could have later moved to another state.

If you think this pertains to you, please telephone the Oregon State Hospital (Administration telephone number 503-945-2870). They can provide you with the list of the 3,500 ladies and gentlemen who are unclaimed.

These ladies and gentlemen were residents of the Salem, Oregon community as well as those who worked or were live-in patients at one of the following 4 hospitals and 2 facilities:

(1) Oregon State Tuberculosis Hospital, (2) Oregon Hospital, (3) Mid-Columbia Hospital, (4) Dammasch State Hospital, plus (5) Oregon State Penitentiary and (6) Fairview Training Center.

If anyone finds a family member or friend of Mr. Bereszazi, please let me know. I would be so happy to know that somebody cares about him.

I'll also translate this into Hungarian over the weekend.
