Summary

American Progress has an immediate opening for a Vice President to run the Poverty to Prosperity Program. The Poverty to Prosperity Program is devoted to advancing progressive policies to cut poverty and expand opportunity in America, with staff working on policy development and analysis, advocacy, and communications. The ideal candidate will bring expertise and strong commitment to working with low-income and other historically marginalized individuals and communities and thrive in a fast-paced workplace where juggling a range of diverse projects and priorities is a constant.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day management of the Poverty team, which includes a managing director, senior fellows, directors, research and advocacy staff, and assistants.
  • Set the strategic direction of the Poverty team, in partnership with the Executive team and other senior American Progress officials.
  • Manage the development of new policy ideas to cut poverty and expand opportunity in America, as well as conduct editorial oversight of the team's written products.
  • Assist team members in crafting and timing policy reports and rapid-response documents that are relevant to the broader policy debate.
  • Work closely with other policy teams to find areas of overlap and define shared messages and policy strategies.
  • Liaise with senior management and other American Progress teams, including the Executive, Government Affairs, Communications, Digital, Development, and Finance teams.
  • Lead fundraising efforts to meet the Poverty team's commitments and allow the team to take on new projects and programs.
  • Represent the Poverty team with the public, press, policymakers, academics, and other outside stakeholders as necessary.
  • Promote American Progress' anti-poverty policy priorities and work products, both inside and outside of the organization.
  • Keep American Progress staff updated on news and events related to economic policy debates in Congress and the administration and respond to requests for information from executive and other senior staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree is required. A master's or other postgraduate degree in public policy, law, or another field related to poverty policy or advocacy is preferred.
  • At least 10 years of political, government, nonprofit, or related experience.
  • Exceptional management and leadership expertise, including a strong commitment to supervising and developing staff.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated excellence in research, analysis, writing, and editing.
  • Demonstrated understanding of how race, gender, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity, and involvement with the justice system intersects with poverty and inequality.
  • Exceptional project management expertise with strong attention to detail and the ability to clearly communicate priorities to staff.
  • Understanding of policies at the international, federal, state, and local levels, or a subset of these.
  • Proven ability to work well with others in a fast-paced environment.
  • Fundraising experience and existing relationships with funders are a plus.
  • Strong commitment to American Progress' mission and goals.
