(Career Progress) New Opening: Senior Advisor to the President, Community Change, Washington, DC

About Community Change and Community Change Action:

Community Change builds the power and capacity of low-income people, especially low-income people of color, to lead powerful and dynamic movements for social change. With our community-based partner groups, we bridge the grassroots and the national, supporting outsider strategies to disrupt the status quo while also building pathways to influence the insider conversation.

Our vision of a better world centers the leadership of impacted people of color to move our work on immigrant rights, economic justice, and racial equity, including a focus on jobs and housing, early childhood care and education, income supports, and immigration reform.

This position also supports Community Change Action, an affiliated 501(c)(4) advocacy organization. While motivated by the same core values – equity, inclusion, and justice – Community Change and Community Change Action operate independently of one another and each organization has its own board of directors.


Position Description:

The Senior Advisor to the President will provide high-level strategic support to the President in planning, executing and ensuring the success of Community Change/Action and the President's priority areas of program work. S/he also supports the President in effectively managing internal and external relationships, to accomplish the President's priorities. S/he manages a number of high-priority projects and supervises select staff as assigned.


Principal Responsibilities:

  • Act as a strategic advisor to the President on programmatic and organizational work – with a focus on the President's priority areas of work and new "Path to Power" (CC/A 4.0) initiatives.
  • Work with President, senior staff and key advisors to prioritize, oversee, and drive his projects and work areas. Coordinate planning and execution of regular meetings of the Community Change Executive Team of senior leaders and staff.
  • Coordinate the preparation and drive the follow-up to the President's meetings with external and internal relationships.
  • Oversee preparation of plans, briefings, speeches, reports, notes and other internal and external products and materials as needed and assigned, in support of the work with the President. This will sometimes involve doing the work directly and sometimes delegating work to appropriate Community Change staff.
  • Supervise staff as assigned.
  • Effectively manage and track the President's critical external and internal relationships.
  • Accompany the President to appropriate high-level meetings, managing and delegating key follow up within Community Change.
  • As appropriate, represent the President and the organization at key internal and external meetings and gatherings. Among the key relationships are Board members, major funders, key elected officials and partners.
  • Manage a number of projects/outcomes related to implementation of Community Change's "Path Power" plan, with a focus on some of the new projects that are among the President's top priorities.

Qualifications:

  • 7-10 years experience in a non-profit or social justice organization.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral.
  • High-level of diplomacy and discretion.
  • Team player with the capacity to be resourceful and flexible.
  • The ability to produce consistent, quality work in a fast-paced environment is essential.
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously and to adjust to frequently changing demands.
  • Commitment to social change through building the capacity and power of low-income people to change their communities and to participate directly in changing public policies.
  • Commitment to advancing economic and race and gender justice.
  • Experience with and/or knowledge of the national progressive organizational landscape and players.

This position reports to: Chief of Staff


Classification: Community Change recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is not included in Community Change's bargaining unit and therefore not covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.


Travel Requirements: Minimal


Salary & benefits: Salary commensurate with experience. Community Change also offers an excellent benefits package, which includes 4 weeks of annual paid vacation; additional paid holiday leave between December 24 and January 1; 8% employer contribution to retirement account after six months of employment (and 3% employer contribution for the first 6 months); and a choice of generous health insurance plans.


This position is located in Washington, DC.
