Campaign Manager, Energy and Environment War Room
Summary
American Progress has an immediate opening for a Campaign Manager to join the Energy and Environment War Room, the Energy and Environment policy team's communications and advocacy staff. The Campaign Manager will drive advocacy campaigns, coalition engagement, and communications tactics for all CAP's climate, energy, and environmental priorities. The campaign manager will also oversee and manage the Energy and Environment story bank project, identifying and working with individuals who have compelling and diverse personal stories about the impacts of climate change and importance of strong environmental protections.
Working in close coordination with the Energy and Environment policy team, the Campaign Manager will identify opportunities to provide greater reach for the organization's research and policy products; develop and implement campaign plans that drive the organization's climate, energy, and environmental priorities; and coordinate national and state-level partner outreach and engagement around key issues and events.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a campaign calendar to leverage American Progress' research and key advocacy priorities.
- Follow the local, state, and national political and policy conversation regarding energy and climate change and make strategic recommendations for CAP's engagement.
- Partner with state-level advocates to drive climate messaging in their states and coordinate with CAP's policy teams on appropriate products.
- Represent American Progress in coalition meetings and on conference calls.
- Cultivate relationships with partner organizations and individuals at the national and state levels who support climate action, with a particular focus on advancing the team's existing partnerships with environmental justice organizations.
- Manage the team's story bank project through digital ad recruitment, stakeholder outreach, and use of CRM software.
- Identify opportunities for storytellers to appear at events, speak to press, and produce digital media content.
- Continuously track progress on grant-funded work.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required skills:
- Strategic opportunism: The ideal candidate will be an expert strategist—someone who always casts a critical eye to opportunities for advancing messages; engages in conversations that further climate change policy debates and political opportunities; and knows how to direct messages at intended audiences. The campaign manager will have an eye for which personal stories will advance the team's strategic narratives.
- Creative and nimble problem solving: The ideal candidate will constantly search out new and creative ways to share American Progress' products and ideas; find new levers to pull in running advocacy campaigns; and otherwise demonstrate a creative and nimble approach to tackling challenges.
- Cool under pressure: The ideal candidate will be able to handle multiple deadlines, including turning around unexpected work quickly and without errors. In doing so, the candidate must demonstrate unflappability and a willingness to take on new challenges.
- Concise and clear writing: The ideal candidate will draft written products in multiple formats and lengths that are concise and easy to follow, driving home key policy and political narratives.
- Relationship building: The ideal candidate will excel at developing the connections and relationships necessary to make advocacy efforts more effective, in particular by supporting the team's partnerships with environmental justice organizations. This includes utilizing one-on-one, small, and large group meetings.
Desired qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent and at least four years of relevant work experience.
- Excellent interpersonal skills as well as excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Prior experience in candidate or issue advocacy campaigns.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with energy or environmental issues.
- Commitment to environmental justice principles, equity, and inclusion.
- At least one cycle of electoral or independent campaign experience is preferred.
- Experience with CRM software or voter databases is a plus.
- Some on-the-record experience is preferred.
- Some experience with grant reporting is preferred.
- Self-starter who takes initiative and seeks direction as needed.
- Experience operating in high-stakes environments that require producing high-quality, accurate products under tight deadlines.
- Superb research and writing ability and ability to plan ahead and set priorities.
- Commitment to American Progress' mission and goals.
