Márton Áron (Csíkszentdomonkos, 1896. augusztus 28. – Gyulafehérvár, 1980. szeptember 29.) a második világháború és a román kommunista rezsim alatt az erdélyi katolikus egyház püspöke.
Székely földműves család harmadik gyermekeként született az erdélyi Csíkszentdomonkoson. Az első világháborús frontszolgálat után jelentkezett a Gyulafehérvári Papneveldébe, első szentmiséjét szülőfalujában mutatta be. XI. Piusz pápa 1938. december 24-én gyulafehérvári püspökké nevezte ki Márton Áront.
1938. novemberi beszédében, amely az Erdélyi Iskola hasábjain nyomtatásban is megjelent, elsők között tiltakozott a háború ellen. 1944. május 18-án Kolozsvárott, a Szent Mihály-templomban mondott beszédében a püspök bátran felemelte szavát a zsidók deportálása ellen, az akkori észak-erdélyi magyar polgári hatóság jelenlétében.
1945 májusában XII. Piusz pápa Serédi Jusztinián hercegprímás halála után Márton Áront kívánta bíborossá kinevezni, azonban Rákosi Mátyás heves tiltakozása miatt végül Mindszenty Józsefet választotta. Rákosi Mátyás ugyanis tudta: Márton Áron nagy tudású, karizmatikus egyéniség.
Így Márton Áron otthon maradt Erdélyben, ahol a magyar kisebbség jogaiért, a vallás- és a lelkiismereti szabadságért harcolt. Az egyre erősödő kommunista és ateista rendszer szerette volna a vallást mielőbb felszámolni Romániában.
1949 tavaszán Márton Áron Felcsíkon volt bérmaúton. A gyimesi hívek egy fehér lovat ajándékoztak neki, s a püspök, fiatal férfiak vezetésével lóháton vonult be Csíksomlyóra, amit az állami hatóság lefilmezett. A püspök a búcsú után, régi szokás szerint, részt vett a székelyudvarhelyi úrnapi körmenetben. Az állami szervek tervbe vették Márton Áron letartóztatását Székelyudvarhely és Segesvár között. A sofőrje mezei és hegyi utakon vitte haza Gyulafehérvárra a püspököt, s mire a hatósági szervek észbe kaptak, a püspök már otthon volt. A püspöki palotát ezután állandó megfigyelés alatt tartották, majd letartóztatták.
Márton Áront, 25 éves papi jubileumára, XII. Piusz pápa címzetes érsekké nevezte ki, de Márton Áron minderről akkor már semmit sem tudott, mert 6 évig volt börtönben 1949 és 1955 között, majd szabadulását követően 1956-ban megtiltották neki, hogy elhagyja a püspöki palotát, s ezáltal leszűkítették mozgáskörét a püspöki székházra, az udvarra, a kertre és a székesegyházra. Ezzel megkezdődött „palotafogsága", amely tizenegy évig tartott (1956–1967 között). A tilalom által nem szakadt meg teljesen kapcsolata híveivel, szabad volt ugyanis látogatókat fogadnia.
1969-ben, életében először, eljutott Rómába is, ahol találkozott VI. Pál pápával, az akkori egyházfővel. Bár nagyon tisztelte VI. Pál pápát, úgy látta, hogy a kommunista diktatúrának és a kommunisták módszereinek ismeretében nincs remény a kompromisszumos megoldásokra.
Márton Áron 1980-ban halt meg, temetésén több mint tízezren gyűltek össze a gyulafehérvári székesegyházban. Emberi nagyságát, méltóságát szellemi hagyatéka őrzi. Jelenleg folyik boldoggá avatása.

Featuring new work from Krisztián Gergye, one of the most prominent contemporary dance choreographers and excerpts from Heiner Muller's renowned contemporary play/opera Hamletmachine, this performance asks a piercing, deeply disturbing pair of questions: how can heroism remain viable as a political attitude and how can remembrance continue to function in the mediatized and relativizing environment of late modernity. Further contributors to the program include composer Péter Zombola, writer András Pályi, visual artist Erzsébet Vojnich, photographer Dániel Dömölky, Artlocator's Udeme Etentuk and Accord Quartet. With the very special participation of operatic soprano phenomenon Viktória Vizin.

Áron Márton (28 August 1896 – 29 September 1980), Servant of God, was the bishop of the Roman Catholic Church in Transylvania during World War II and the communist dictatorship in Romania.
Áron Márton was born into a Székely Hungarian peasant family in Csíkszentdomokos, Transylvania, Kingdom of Hungary (present-day Sândominic, Harghita County, Romania). After graduating from secondary school in 1915, he was drafted into the Austro-Hungarian Army. He was involved in battles of World War I in different military theatres, and was injured several times.
In 1920, Márton began his theology studies in Alba Iulia. Following this, he became a chaplain, and later theology professor in various Transylvanian localities. He was appointed the Bishop of Alba Iulia by Pope Pius XI in 1938.
Áron Márton was one of the first intellectuals to openly oppose the preparations for World War II, which he was already doing in 1938. He stayed in southern Transylvania, which remained part of Romania after the Second Vienna Award. In a speech he gave in St. Michael's Church, during a visit to Kolozsvár (Romanian: Cluj) in May 1944, he condemned the prepared deportation of Romanian and Hungarian Jews. A couple of days later, he wrote letters to the Hungarian Government, to the Police and other authorities, requesting the prohibition of the deportation. As a response, Márton was expelled from the city.
In 1945, after the death of Cardinal Jusztinián Serédi, Pope Pius XII wanted Márton to become the next Cardinal in Hungary, but, as the Hungarian Communist Party strongly opposed him, József Mindszenty was chosen for the position.
Áron Márton stayed in his homeland Transylvania and continued to be a strong advocate for religious freedom and human rights. This made him a prominent enemy of the Romanian Communist Party and of the dictatorial regime it established in late 1947.
The Bishop was arrested in June 1948 and was sentenced to life imprisonment; five years later, with the change of the political climate in Romania, the circumstances of his captivity became more bearable. He was moved into a villa in the outskirts of Bucharest, he was also given back his prayer book, but was not allowed to contact the outside world. He was ultimately released in 1955.
Márton subsequently decided to revisit his bishopric, being received by an enthusiastic crowd. This proved embarrassing for the authorities, and he was subsequently confined to house arrest. Áron Márton was not allowed to leave the bishopric building for the following 11 years, and only emerged in 1967. He was finally released as a result of negotiations conducted by the Austrian Cardinal König in Bucharest. Over the following years, as he was still cautious of possible harassment from the authorities, Márton was accompanied by groups of Székely volunteers on his pastoral trips.
