(Career Progress) JOB - Program Associate - Public Citizen's Democracy if for People Campaign - DuPont Circle (Washington, DC)

Program Associate - Democracy Is For People Campaign

Our democracy is under attack with Big Money dominating our elections like never before. The U.S. Supreme Court's Citizens United and McCutcheon rulings are empowering a narrow band of elites to dominate politics.

Public Citizen's Democracy Is For People (DIFP) campaign is working to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and related cases that make it impossible to place limits on outside spending in elections.

We have made incredible progress. Sixteen states and more than 550 cities and counties have called for an amendment. We've gained the support of President Obama, and the U.S. Senate will vote this year on a bill calling for an amendment.

We are expanding our campaign and are looking for someone who can help us make these successes known and raise the profile of the movement as a whole through our online and media outreach. The Program Associate will work closely with the two DIFP Campaign Directors, our Online Advocacy and Fundraising team and the Communications department, to develop and execute an overall strategy for the online components of the campaign and to provide assistance with media outreach associated with the campaign. While the position encompasses several different areas, the main focus and majority of work will be on the online activities and campaigns.

Specific responsibilities include:

  1. Online Communications and Organizing: In conjunction with the DIFP and the Communications department, draw up strategic online and communications plans to meet short- and long-term goals. Work with the Online Team to make sure that online strategy, tactics, and messaging fit in well with Public Citizen's overall online work. Help write and upload email messages and develop action pages to engage members to take action with the campaign. Help coordinate strategic efforts to grow the Democracy Is For People email list and deepen the engagement of activists in the campaign.

  2. Proactive Media Relations: Work with the Communications department to develop media strategies and national/state press contact lists, assist with the drafting of press materials (press releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, blog posts), and engage media through opportunities created by the campaign (such as rallies and press conferences) and opportunities presented by outside events (rapid response).

  3. Materials: Work with DIFP and the Communications department to write and copy edit fact sheets and other background documents, coordinating with the Communications department on projects that involve graphic designers, printers and other contractors.

  4. Social Media: Engage with social media for the campaign, including Twitter and Facebook.

  5. Website Content: Update and develop content for DemocracyIsForPeople.org, the CitizenVox blog, and coalition websites. Skills in video production, editing, and/or graphic design or HTML a plus.

  6. Provide general support: Provide support for other online campaigns and efforts.

Qualifications:

  • College degree preferred.

  • 2+ years of experience in communications/media relations or with grassroots/organizing campaign.  Experience with online organizing and social media preferred.

  • Experience with basic HTML, working experience with Salsa, Convio, or similar online advocacy and email tools required.

  • Strong writing skills required, with a strong background in persuasive and engaging campaign communications. Demonstrated command of proper English grammar and AP style.

  • A predilection for detail-oriented work, as required to efficiently and accurately manipulate databases, build and troubleshoot Web pages, and code emails in raw HTML.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced campaign and handle a multitude of issues.

  • Enthusiasm for democracy reform and social justice.

  • Excellent inter-personal skills.
