(Career Progress) HIRING: Senior political position - AFT


The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) is hiring for a political desk position (senior associate) in our political department. Salary details available via the link to the job description. This position does need to be based in Washington, DC.

This position is a great fit for someone who has experience working on political campaigns or for a social justice nonprofit. Organizing experience and navigating political relationships are key.

Position Summary: 
The senior associate will assist AFT local and state affiliates with political and legislative activities by providing guidance and expertise on legislative, electoral, political fundraising, and civic participation programs such as Get Out the Vote, with an emphasis on member engagement. The senior associate will spend significant time in states working directly with affiliate leaders and their staff and will also coordinate AFT's field participation in other labor or independent expenditure activities. 

Position Responsibilities: 
• Work directly with AFT affiliates to develop, plan and implement political and legislative programs and activities in support of the union's goals. 
• Develop and implement training programs in support of AFT's political and legislative activities. 
• Organize and maintain records of local and state federation field activity and provide regular reports. 
• Other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 
• A minimum of three years' labor union experience with a union and/or as a labor campaign coordinator; equivalent experience with a major political party or campaign management. 
• Experience with campaign field writing. 
• Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written, as well as the ability to work in a collegial manner. 
• Background working for or in a union environment or social justice organization is considered a plus. 

Work Environment: 
• Work is in an office environment; but frequently requires the ability to drive and travel throughout the United States, as assigned.
