Position Name: Political Director (or Senior Political Director* for experienced applicants)
Reporting Structure: This role currently reports to Co-Founder & Co-Executive Director Ross Morales Rocketto; this role will report to a new VP of Programs position starting in approximately June 2022.
Essential Duties: Oversight and execution of Run for Something's election administrator program (70%), development of new political programming (10%), and management & leadership (20%).
Job Classification: Full Time, Exempt
Position Summary
Run for Something is currently hiring for a Political Director. In this role, you will report to the Co-Founder & Co-Executive Director. Your primary responsibilities are threefold. First, you will be responsible for overseeing and executing all current RFS political programs, which includes our new program recruiting and supporting election administrators. Second, you will be responsible for supporting the RFS Co-Founder & Co-Executive Director on the development of new political programming. Third, you will serve as a high-level leader in the RFS team, including managing the Senior Political Manager.
As a member of the RFS Leadership Team, the Political Director must also contribute, integrate, and hold themselves and their department accountable to the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) goals that Run for Something has established, and actively contribute towards the creation of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture.
*We are open to this position as Senior Political Director for strongly qualified candidates. More information can be found below under Additional Qualifications (for applicants seeking the title of Senior Political Director). Salary for the position of Political Director is $97,500 and for the Senior Political Director is $110,300. See salary information below for more details.
Responsibilities
The Political Director will help RFS accomplish our strategic imperatives via:
Election Administration Program Management (70%):
- Oversee and execute day-to-day responsibilities related to Run for Something's election administration work. This will include coordinating with existing team members and partners as well as ensuring the program hits its stated goals.
- Facilitate regular cross-team meetings to ensure all involved team members are aligned and executing their work.
- Lead regular check-in meetings with key external partners to provide updates, answer questions, and get alignment on key elements of the program.
- Oversee the work of multiple contractors who will be executing various pieces of the work.
- Regular check-ins with the Co-Founder & Co-Executive Director to update on the status of the program.
New Political Programming Development (approximately 10%):
- Thought partnership and development of written materials for future political programs. For example: a potential school board program.
- The scope of this work will likely expand after the 2022 election cycle and include activities such as development of new political programming ideas with the help of RFS leadership, as well as oversight over those new programs.
Management & Leadership (approximately 20%):
- As a member of the RFS Leadership Team, contribute to organization-wide strategy and initiatives; be an active leader and advocate for RFS' philosophy, mission, values, culture, and DEI goals throughout the organization
- Manage, mentor, and coach Political team staff (currently, a Senior Political Manager) in line with RFS values and performance management standards to ensure relevant key performance indicators are met; identify and support areas for professional development
- Oversee the Political team's work and ensure the work remains on-track. That work includes strengthening existing partnerships and building new ones for the purpose of recruiting candidates, supporting candidates, and brand-building to do the other two things. Additionally, the Senior Political Manager oversees the RFS Ascend program, RFS's direct candidate contribution program that currently operates in TX, PA, and VA (and may expand in the future).
- Vet, hire, onboard, and oversee program consultants
- Create and manage program and department budgets, including management of any restrictions related to non-partisan vs. political programming.
Key Goals
Success in this role will look like…
- Consistent transparency across RFS on the election administration project as well as any additional political programming.
- Successful coaching and management of the Senior Political Manager, ensuring they have what they need to be successful and that the partner program remains on-track.
- Successfully executing the election administration program, which consists of recruiting and supporting election administration candidates to run for office and win.
Minimum Qualifications
- 7+ years working either on campaigns or at political/advocacy organizations
- At least two cycles working on electoral campaigns
- Experience managing at least one full-time staff member
- Experience managing and overseeing the work of contractors
- Ability to manage and manage up in a remote environment
- Experience in either leading the development of a new program, or experience on a team that had to develop a new program
- Strong project management skills, which includes being extremely organized, ability to turn a vision into tangible next steps, and ability to coordinate across multiple personalities, departments, and interests
- Strong communications skills
- Strong relationship-building skills via email, phone, and video
- Ability to prioritize and stay focused on the most important work
- Ability to work independently for extended periods of time in a remote environment
- Strong commitment to the RFS mission
- Ability to work in and contribute to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment
- Experienced leader who understands how to leverage their influence toward a collaborative, supportive culture of excellence

Additional Qualifications (for applicants seeking the role of Senior Political Director)
All of the above qualifications, plus:
- Experience developing written plans, budgets, and concept notes
- Experience working with and managing up to principals, specifically around donor and/or partnership work
- Experience overseeing multiple political projects at the same time
- Experience hiring, growing, and scaling teams
- Experience planning long-range vision of political strategy
- Experience managing larger, more complex teams responsible for multiple program strategies across multiple organizational departments

Work Environment
Run for Something is (and always has been and will be) a remote office environment; you will collaborate with colleagues who are based across the United States. You should be prepared to either work from home or a location of your choosing.
When it is safe to do so, this position will require attendance at approximately 2 all-staff events per year, which may include overnight travel.
This position requires the ability to work core hours, Monday through Friday. This position may also require occasional night and weekend hours to support election watch across various time zones.
Essential Physical Requirements
- As this is a remote position, the person in this position must be able to communicate with colleagues and partners via phone, including conference and video calls, as well as written communication such as Slack and email.
- The position requires the ability to work on a computer for all or part of the work day.
- The position requires the ability to attend events that may encompass all or part of the work day, including overnight travel when necessary.
- This position will include travel, as described above.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary for the Political Director is set at $97,500, and salary for the Senior Political Director is set at $110,300. In order to counter pay inequality and uphold internal parity, salaries are non-negotiable for new and current employees. Similarly, there are no title increase negotiations; to qualify for Senior Director, applicants must meet the additional qualifications noted in this job description. Run for Something salary bands for a given staff level are benchmarked to the 75th percentile for our sector, and all new employees are paid at the entry point of those bands. Employees then have the opportunity to progress through current salary bands through annual cost of living increases and performance-based pay increases, and into new salary bands through promotions.
