ABOUT THE PLAY

At the center of Young Playwrights' Theater's 25th Anniversary season will be the 7th installment of Silence is Violence, YPT's original social justice performance series. YPT investigates the impact of arts activism over the series' 5-year history and the social issues that sparked the youth voices of Silence is Violence. Through a gripping story, YPT explores the power of art in the wake of traumatic events and takes you inside the trials and triumphs of the YPT classroom and into the thoughts, fears and hopes of our young people.

Since its inception in 2015, Silence is Violence has been YPT's most immediate and direct route of addressing social justice issues affecting Washington, DC area youth through performance and community dialogue. Each Silence is Violence performance has centered the voices of our young people and the issues that affect them the most. The series has addressed issues of police brutality and the resulting murders of Black people at the hands of police, immigration policies that abuse the rights of and negatively affect the lives of immigrants and naturalized citizens, LGBTQ+ stories, culture and pride, urban environmentalism, gentrification and the experiences of displaced young, Black mothers. With these young people's permission, YPT shapes their words into a theatrical production featuring professional performers, furthering YPT's vision that young people's voices are not only significant but also powerful.
