About Run for Something 

Run for Something recruits and supports young progressives running for down-ballot offices in the United States. After launching in January 2017, we have recruited about 40,000 potential political candidates, endorsed more than 900, and are responsible for over 200 new elected officials around the country. We are a high-reaching, hungry team changing the face of politics in America.

Position Summary

As a Regional Director, you will play a pivotal role in bringing our Strategic Plan to life.

 

In this role you will report to the Senior Regional Director. Your primary responsibilities will include recruiting and engaging candidates who are running for - or should run for - state legislative and local offices, assessing campaign strategies of candidates, ensuring candidates are utilizing RFS resources, and supporting candidates throughout their campaigns. You're the beating heart of the RFS team -- your work with our candidates is the meat and potatoes of our program.

Run for Something is currently hiring for two Regional Director positions: 

  • Northern Regional Director, responsible for the following states:

    • PA, NJ, DE, MD, DC, NY, CT, RI, MA, VT, NH, ME

  • Southern Regional Director, responsible for the following states:

    • AR, LA, MS, TN, KY, AL, GA, FL, SC, NC, VA, WV 

 

Responsibilities

Regional Directors will help RFS accomplish our strategic imperatives via:

  • Candidate recruitment:

    1. Seeking out current and potential candidates who fit the Run for Something standard. 

    2. Determining and executing on innovative methods to recruit candidates beyond conventional or traditional pipeline.

  • Candidate support:

    1. Ensuring current candidates receive high-level support on all facets of their campaigns.

  • Partner relationships:

    1. Upholding Run for Something's reputation as a good actor in the ecosystem in order to leverage our connections for our candidates

    2. Expanding the scope of existing relationships to include new groups.

 

To service those efforts, Regional Directors will be expected to:

  • Develop and execute state plans to increase the number of young people, especially young women and people of color, running for elected office.

    • Regionals will write a comprehensive plan for engagement and be expected to update it annually.

    • These plans will detail how the Regional will accomplish recruitment, support, and partnership goals across every state in their region in a way that contributes to our 2019-2020 Strategic Plan.

    • Regionals are encouraged to identify and track key metrics pertaining to their region, candidates, and/or the organization as a whole.

  • Engage with candidates and campaign staff of RFS endorsed candidates to evaluate their campaign plans for the fundamental mechanics needed to run a winning race, and connect them to useful professionals, trainings, and other resources.

  • Assess candidates for endorsement.

    • Utilize a thorough vetting process to determine which candidates shall receive the Run for Something endorsement.

  • Develop strong relationships with state legislative caucus leadership, in-state labor leaders, progressive leaders, and other allied organizations.

    • RFS has active partnerships with groups across the country. Regionals will be expected to facilitate the growth of relationships with existing partners and to identify and cultivate relationships with organizations RFS has no or limited relationships with.

  • Identify and surface trends, good stories, and other anecdotes that would benefit the broader organizational interests.

    • Examples could include: Discovering a school board where four consecutive high school seniors have been elected as members; a candidate on the doors convincing an undecided voter who then ends up helping the candidate finish their canvass list; a group of parents running for office in the same area who also help one another with childcare throughout the campaign.

  • Represent Run for Something at public events like trainings, conferences, and relevant state table meetings.

    • Frequency to be determined by schedules and necessity. 

    • In 2018-2019, Regional Directors attended over a dozen of these events.

  • Track communications with candidates and partner groups:

    • Update status of communications on a weekly basis by maintaining an internal system for documenting how candidate and partner interactions are progressing.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Key Goals 

Success in this role will look like...

  • Maintaining communication with and support for candidates throughout the entirety of the election cycle

  • Evaluating and understanding the dynamics of multiple races throughout the election cycle based on factors including, but not limited to, candidate needs and election competitiveness, and allocating time and resources accordingly.

  • Cultivating and sustaining relationships with dozens of local, state, and national partners.

 

Minimum Qualification

  • Two-to-three cycles of campaign experience, preferably at the state or local level. 

  • Thorough understanding of state politics.

  • Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to manage multiple projects.

  • Ability to work independently for extended periods of time in a remote environment

  • Willingness to travel. Each quarter, Regional Directors are expected to take up to four multi-day trips to states within their region.

  • Commitment to diversity of our candidates.

Work Environment

Run for Something is a remote office environment; you will collaborate with colleagues who are based across the United States. You should be prepared to either work from home or a location of your choosing. Additionally, you will need to live in or relocate to the region that you are representing. We are currently hiring for two positions: the Northern and Southern Regional. Your position will require travel approximately 25-30% of the time. Employees will be required to attend the annual Run for Something staff retreat (January 6-10, 2020) in addition to other in person events throughout the year.

 

Salary is commensurate with experience, with a range of $75,000 - $85,000 per year.

Essential Physical Requirements 

  • As noted above, this position requires frequent travel; this may include airplanes, car travel, or trains. The candidate must possess a valid driver's license and be able to travel throughout areas that require transportation by car. 

  • The person in this position frequently communicates with candidates, staff, and partner groups via phone, including conference and video calls. Candidate must be able to

exchange accurate information in these situations.

  • The position requires the ability to work on a computer for all or part of the work day.  

  • The position requires the ability to attend events which may encompass all or part of the work day.
