Position Available – Researcher
Public Citizen's Congress Watch division
Public Citizen is a national, non-partisan, public interest group with more than350,000 members and supporters. The Congress Watch division conducts public education campaigns and advocates before the Congress and administrative agencies on issues including money in politics, open government, corporate accountability, financial regulation, consumer protection, access to justice, workplace safety, and healthcare.
General Description of Position: Researchers conceive, initiate, and manage investigative research projects; build and query databases; and write time-sensitive reports and other materials in support of Congress Watch's public education and advocacy campaigns.
Responsibilities:
- Investigate policy issues, individuals, corporations, political fundraising issues, and trade associations by using traditional investigative methods such as database searches, FOIA requests, and interviews .Conceive and produce written materials in collaboration with other team members, including: reports, editorial board memos, op-eds, and blog posts.
- Create and analyze databases.
- Maintain familiarity with a range of current policy issues, debates, and proposals, primarily in the areas of money-in-politics, financial services regulation, workplace safety, and access to justice. (Researchers may specialize in one or more areas.)
- Respond to information requests, including from Congress and news media.
- Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications & Characteristics:
Master's degree or commensurate experience preferred. Outstanding analytical thinking and oral and written communication skills. Strong sense of how to use research to affect public policy debates. Creative and collaborative spirit. High energy, enthusiasm, persistence, and attention to detail. Ability to work independently and balance multiple priorities under pressure to produce essential material in a deadline-driven advocacy environment. Experience doing research and writing as an investigative reporter, opposition researcher, or for legislative or electoral campaigns. Knowledge of computer-assisted reporting techniques and database development and management. Knowledge of public records, especially regarding campaign finance and lobbying.Salary and Benefits:
