Germany’s invasion of Hungary in 1944 marked the end of a culture that had dominated Central Europe from the nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth. In this evocative memoir, Charles Farkas offers a testament to this vanished way of life—its society, morality, personal integrity, wealth, traditions, and chivalry—as well as an eyewitness account of its destruction, begun at the hands of the Nazis and then completed under the heel of Soviet Communism. Farkas’s recollections of growing up in Budapest, a city whose grandeur embraced—indeed spanned— the Danube River; his vivid descriptions of everyday life in Hungary before, during, and after World War II; and his ultimate fight to freedom in the United States, remind us that behind the larger historical events of the past century are the stories of the individual men and women who endured and, ultimately, survived them.

Charles Farkas was born in 1925 in Budapest, Hungary. In 1949, he earned a double doctorate in law and political science from the University of Pázmány Péter. After the failure of the 1956 Hungarian uprising, Farkas fled Hungary for the United States, where he received a master’s in library science from Columbia University. He went on to become director of the Briarcliff Manor Public Library, where he worked from 1968 until his retirement in 1996. He and his wife Edit live in Chappaqua, New York. They have four children and five grandsons (three of which also live in Chappaqua).

The Festival was founded in 2004 by Nancy Roldán with the cooperation of Ernest Ragogini and other music professionals. Some of them are currently on the board of directors. Inaugurated in 2005, and held biennially, the event includes competitions for solo piano and duo collaborative artists. Notre Dame of Maryland  University has hosted the event since 2006  to the present.

The Liszt-Garrison Festival and International Piano Competition 2011 celebrated the bicentennial birth of Franz Liszt and the Fifth Anniversary of the event via a five-day commemoration featuring performances, lectures, and recitals showcasing the expertise and artistry of world-renowned musicians. Two world premieres for solo piano enhanced the festivity: Angelus by Jorge VIllavicencio Grossmann, and Calle veneziana by Kye Ryung Park.

The Liszt-Garrison Festival and International Piano Competition, under the aegis of the Baltimore Washington Chapter of the American Liszt Society, depends upon the financial support and presence of music lovers to continue its mission of reinforcing good will among musicians, bringing music to the community at large, and assisting artists in furthering their career goals. Notre Dame of Maryland  University has hosted the event since 2006.

[Unicum] last reminder: Szekely Autonomy Event in DC (THIS Sunday, October 27, 12:00pm)

Come and join us (https://www.facebook.com/events/203896163123897/) supporting the autonomy (freedom) struggles of the Szekely people, here in DC (in front of the White House [South side], similar to what we did a few months ago) - with a lot of Szekely flags [we have plenty of flags, however if you have one bring it along].
 When: THIS Sunday October 27, at 12pm (plan to be there for about 1 to 2 hours)
 Where: in front of the White House (E St, between the South Lawn of the White House and the Ellipse, more specifically the NW quadrant of the Ellipse)

If you have any items of hungarian folk crafts, plates, vases, pillowcase, tablecloths, clothes, folk costumes, jewelry, pottery, christmas decorations etc, or anything you do not need anymore, please donate them to our troop.

         Our annual Hungarian Christmas Bazaar is our biggest fundraising event which is very important to us and also a huge success every year.
Proceeds from the Bazaar will benefit several charitable causes as well as the Hungarian Scout Troop of Washington.
