(Career Progress) Progressive Talent Pipeline: Getting progressives hired in Congress and the executive branch

I wanted to reach out regarding an exciting project I'm supporting called the Progressive Talent Pipeline, which is a program to identify, endorse, train, and recommend a diverse slate of committed progressives for staff roles in Congress and the executive branch.

Working in government is one of the most strategic ways to impact policy-making and shape the national political discourse, but there is not always an obvious entry point for potential staffers who do not already have insider connections and are not yet trained in the workings of Congress or other parts of the federal government.

Our vision is to bring new perspectives, expertise, and energy into governance in order to "build the bench" of progressive staff talent and advance progressive priorities.

We have helped more than 40 people secure employment in government, and we are launching our 2020 cycle ahead of potentially large numbers of openings in Congress and the executive branch.

Are you a progressive thinker, writer, communications maven, organizer or activist who wants to serve as a government staffer in Congress or the executive branch?

Do you have a strong, demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice?

Are fired up to support the kind of policy objectives members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus have led on -- things like: advancing Medicare for All, tackling climate change through major public investments, expanding voting rights, ending militarism and unconstitutional wars, reining in the power of Wall Street and Big Pharma, and instituting a humane immigration system?

I've included more information below about the timeline and what it means to be an endorsed candidate. But if you're interested or have questions about this role, please feel free to reach out. And if you know someone who might be interested, please spread the word!

Matt Lockshin
(he, his)

Here's how the Progressive Talent Pipeline works:

1.   Complete our application so we can learn a bit about your background, your ideas, and why you want to join government.

The priority application deadline for the Progressive Talent Pipeline is September 30, 2020 at 11:59pm Pacific Time. Applications received after that deadline will be assessed on a rolling basis, as capacity permits.

2. We'll invite select candidates to interview based on our evaluation of their application. A subset of candidates interviewed will receive an endorsement from the Progressive Talent Pipeline.

For those that apply by the priority deadline, we intend to make endorsement decisions before Thanksgiving.

3. Endorsed candidates will be invited to an online training or series of online trainings in December. (In December of 2018 we had about 150 endorsed candidates come to a three-day training in DC, featuring presentations from current and former Members of Congress, current and former senior government staffers, think tank leaders, and organizers. The training focused on legislative policy making, communications, and a variety of policy issues, empowering program participants to hit the ground running as new Capitol Hill hires. But due to COVID we're moving the 2020 training online, with the exact dates and format still TBD.)

4. Endorsed candidates will apply to roles directly to jobs they're interested in. We will seek to alert candidates about (and recommend candidates for) particular openings that we think might be a good fit for their talents and interests, and we will provide additional advice and guidance to help candidates successfully land a job in Congress or the executive branch.

You can find out more information about the program (including more information about various staff roles and the typical salary ranges for them) at:

Note: We want Congress and the executive branch to be staffed with people who represent the diversity of the United States, and ensure that the people helping to make federal policy both authentically understand and can effectively respond to the needs of communities that can't afford high-priced lobbyists. So people from historically disenfranchised groups or communities are encouraged to apply.

A high school senior, Jade, experiences a "crisis of science" when an eclipse doesn't occur as scheduled. Her persuasive science teacher tells her not to read into it, but as signs of death and ruin begin to appear around her, Jade fears for the safety of her twin brother, Kai, who almost lost his life during an eclipse eighteen years earlier. In a story told out of sequence, Kai tries to make sense of his place within a love triangle while Jade tries to make sense of her place within a collapsing universe.

GALVANIZE: Truth to Power Cafe

Hey Galvanize Fam

Jeremy Goldstein is an artist and producer from the UK coming to America (virtually) via Montgomery College's Cultural Arts Center to produce a show/event called TRUTH TO POWER CAFE.  Read more about his work here.

He is looking for people from all walks of life (including artists like you!) to answer this prompt -- "Who has power over you and what do you want to say to them?"

He is collecting responses to incorporate into a showcase of stories centering confrontation with and/or liberation from our personal "occupiers."  It is a celebration of the individual and their struggle for expression, reclamation, and wholeness.

Interested?

Well, this is not a paid gig. If this is not for you at this time please forward to someone living in the DMV who may have a compelling story to tell (they don't have to be a performing artist).

Due date of the 100 word response is this Wednesday Sept 9.  Submit your story to this site. If chosen for a "callback" you will be interviewed by Jerermy (performer/producer) and the director of the piece and those chosen for the show will be encouraged to expand that response to 300-400 words. If not chosen for the show, many will be encouraged to record their responses for a website platform for visitors to peruse.

The actual show will be constructed over a 2-3 week period and the show will air Oct 10.

Hope to see your face in the place.

(Career Progress) [JOB] Color Of Change is hiring a Senior Web Developer!

About Color of Change

Color Of Change is the nation's largest online racial justice organization. We develop strategies to put an end to policies and practices holding Black people back while championing the solutions that move all people forward. As a national force driven by over one million members, we move decision-makers in corporations and government to create a more humane and less hostile world for Black people in America. In 2005, Color Of Change was founded in response to the realization that during the Hurricane Katrina crisis, no one was afraid to disappoint Black people. There were no consequences for Black people being left stranded on their roofs to die, nor was there sufficient infrastructure among Black communities to aggregate our power and demand them for those that perpetuated or refused to acknowledge the tragic injustice. Color Of Change is impacting lives by introducing accountability into the systems of decision-making. We leverage emerging technologies and our media savvy and sharp focus to build the power it takes to move decision-makers in corporations, media, and government to drive meaningful change for Black people in service of ending injustice for all oppressed groups.

Team Summary

The Marketing & Storytelling team creates and leads the brand and content strategy necessary to translate and advance COC's values, vision, and efforts across a broad set of national influencers and grassroots activists. Through various platforms and mediums, the team is responsible for supporting efforts across the organization to deliver on our main promise: provoking the level and frequency of action from our members and allies that will force target decision-makers to take action and thereby achieve real-world impact and lasting, systemic change. The team is also responsible for brand management, strategic content development, content distribution, and high-level media relations. Central to the Marketing & Storytelling team's work is COC's Hollywood work that is designed to change the way Black people (and the issues we care about) are represented in entertainment media and to effectively leverage cultural influencers to support our campaigns.

Position Description

Working with the Chief Marketing & Storytelling Officer (CMSO), the Senior Web Developer will be responsible for ensuring high quality online user-experience across all COC's website properties, platforms, and other online tools in support of our campaigns, and work related to social media and content distribution. The Senior Web Developer will also play a role in helping to foster brand alignment by managing technology-related vendors; working closely with other developers; collaborating with the marketing, campaigns, and social media and content teams; and providing the overall technology strategy for the organization.

The ideal candidate is a leader who:

  • Thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative, digitally native organization.
  • Has a strategic vision for how online technology and tools can help build grassroots power to influence important, far-reaching decisions on issues that disproportionately impact Black communities.
  • A "Roll-up-your-sleeves" entrepreneurial, startup attitude.
  • Desire to innovate in the world of online organizing.
  • Passion for web-based software products.

Responsibilities

Planning and Project Management (30%)

  • Plan and project manage technology development projects, whether done internally or outsourced to a third party.
  • Support CMSO in building a multi-year strategy to grow the visibility and influence of Color Of Change through the organization's online platforms and products.
  • Support CMSO to ensure quality and consistency of brand identity, narrative, tone, and personality across all online platforms and products.
  • Optimize COC's digital properties for search and user experience across all channels (website, social media, email, mobile, video, print, and in-person).
  • Develop partnerships with individuals and institutions to drive Color Of Change social media presence and brand toward new audiences, platforms, and opportunities.
  • Guide development of content to support the Executive Director, CMSO, and other senior staff efforts to amplify COC's thought leadership.

Strategy Development (20%)

  • Work in partnership with COC's Campaigns team to identify new technology-enabled campaigning opportunities.
  • Anticipate technology and capability challenges, and communicate clear proactive plans to address these challenges.
  • Identify strategies to evolve our technology infrastructure (websites, campaign applications, and campaign CRM).
  • Develop and align SMART goals for the product team with the broader short and long-term goals of CMSO and COC as a whole.

Technical/Execution (20%)

  • Create a technical culture of rapid but structured iteration.
  • Lead, define, represent, and communicate product strategy to leadership across COC.
  • Represent COC as a product strategist and thought-leader at conferences, discussions, and other field related events pertinent to building awareness of our online presence.
  • Product planning and assignment of tasks and deliverables.
  • Drive innovative ideas, solutions, and products through leadership and decisive action.

People Management (20%)

  • Manage and evaluate staff and other partners, including creative vendors, research partners, marketing partners, cross-channel distribution and collaboration partners, and any others who help us advance our agenda.
  • Lead, manage, and mentor a team of product managers, developers, and related personnel.

Information security (10%)

  • Work with outside consultants and embedded fellow to maintain and enhance our security practices relative to our online platforms and products.

Qualifications

We don't like to insert a long list of "must-haves" here. What we know is that this is not a traditional product role. We are looking for a creative and mature leader with vision and insight, recognizing that person could come from a range of backgrounds.

Some or all of these would be great to see in the ideal candidate's background:

  • Digital marketing, creative direction, and partnership experiences.
  • Prior experience working in product/app development and user experience optimization.
  • Experience managing media engagement for both rapid response and long lead stories.
  • Experience with Django and/or ActionKit is required.
  • Experience leading and managing a team.
  • Experience with agile development processes and monthly or weekly product release cycles.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex projects and the ability to manage staff and consultants seamlessly.
  • Ability to work with different people across multiple teams effectively.
  • A data-driven philosophy: testing, evaluating, and iterating are key parts of your modus operandi.
  • A solid technology background, with an understanding of how core Internet technologies fit together (HTML, CSS, SQL, back-end languages, etc.)
  • Direct experience building and managing online tools and platforms under tight deadlines for rapid response campaigns.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a willingness to give (and receive) feedback.

HOW TO APPLY

Click "Apply for this position" and submit a resume and COC-specific cover letter. Applications will be received on a rolling basis.
