Title: Change the Climate 2020 Campaign Director

Status: Exempt

Reports to: SVP, Government Affairs

Positions Reporting to this Position:  None

General Description:

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) works to turn environmental values into national, state, and local priorities. LCV, in collaboration with our state LCV partners, advocates for sound environmental laws and policies, holds elected officials accountable for their votes and actions, and elects pro-environmental candidates who will champion our priority issues.

LCV’s work to protect and advocate for the environment is rooted in our commitment to racial, social and environmental justice. Communities of color are disproportionately impacted by climate change and pollution. For this reason, racial justice and equity are inextricably linked to protecting our environment. Within the organization, we are actively building a workplace culture that demonstrates how we value equity and inclusion through more intentional and inclusive practices. We are committed to building an organization that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills.

LCV is hiring a Campaign Director for our Change the Climate 2020 program - this effort will raise the climate crisis as a pressing political issue and ensure that addressing it is a top priority for the next president. Our goals for this campaign are to elevate climate action as a top tier issue in the run up to the 2020 presidential primary elections; ensure that the candidates for president fully appreciate and express the scope of the climate crisis, commit to solutions, and make the issue one of their top three priorities; and ensure that the eventual nominee is prepared, eager, and committed to taking ambitious action on climate change on day one as president.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate across departments within LCV to develop cohesive campaign plans to engage voters, donors, media and the candidates to make climate action a top priority as outlined in the campaign goals above.
  • Harness the power of LCV’s national membership, field programs and state network to design campaigns to pressure all the candidates to prioritize climate action.
  • Work collaboratively with the Conservation Voters Movement, our network of 30 state partners, and build partnerships with diverse organizations in the environmental, environmental justice and progressive movements to ensure that this campaign is rooted in climate justice and local communities and builds power for our organizations and communities.
  • Ensure the campaign advances LCV’s racial justice goals, including by helping strengthen advocacy campaigns engaging communities of color and racial justice organizations early in the campaign development process, and pursuing policies that address racial inequities.
  • Facilitate work of all LCV departments to implement campaign goals including coordinating cross-department meetings and tracking campaign progress.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Work Experience: At least 10 years of work experience in issue or political campaigns. Background working on Capitol Hill, in the executive branch, or at an advocacy or political organization strongly preferred. Experience with politics, coalitions and lobbying.
  • Skills: Must possess excellent written and verbal communications skills, including ability to write and implement comprehensive campaign plans, and be well-organized. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, handling multiple assignments with tight deadlines. Highly motivated, curious and collaborative. Sound political judgement. Proven track record successfully working across lines of race, ethnicity, language, class, gender and other identities and experiences. Ability to translate an idea into a campaign with policy demands, campaign targets and a theory of change and work collaboratively to implement successful campaign plans. Experience working across departments or teams within an organization. Commitment to measuring and tracking progress and outcomes.
  • Cultural Competence: Demonstrated awareness of one’s own cultural identity, views about difference, and the ability to learn and build on varying cultural and community norms. A commitment to the complex understanding of racial justice and the urgency of confronting institutional racism and inequity within our political system. Commitment to equity and inclusion as organizational practice and culture.
  • Conditions: Able to work long hours to get the job done. This position is based in Washington, D.C. but qualified candidates outside of D.C. are welcome to apply.

Duration: This position is temporary through August 2020.

To Apply: Please send your resume, cover letter and three references to hr@lcv.org  with “Change the Climate 2020 Campaign Director” in the subject line no later than March 20, 2019. No phone calls please.
