(Career Progress) JOB: Media Relations Manager, Center for Community Change, Washington, DC

Media Relations Manager

About CCC + CCCAction:

The Center for Community Change (CCC) builds the power and capacity of low-income people, especially low-income people of color, to lead powerful and dynamic movements for social change. With our community-based partner groups, we bridge the grassroots and the national, supporting outsider strategies to disrupt the status quo while also building pathways to influence the insider conversation.

Our vision of a better world centers the leadership of impacted people of color to move our work on immigrant rights, economic justice, and racial equity, including a focus on jobs and housing, early childhood care and education, income supports, and immigration reform.

This position also supports the Center for Community Change Action (CCCA), an affiliated 501(c)(4) advocacy organization. While motivated by the same core values – equity, inclusion, and justice – CCC and CCCA operate independently of one another and each organization has its own board of directors.

Position Description:

CCC is looking for an experienced and savvy media relations manager to oversee our outreach in mainstream media nationwide. We are looking for a seasoned communicator who will be critical in creating the kind of content that will move people to action. The right person understands the intersection of economic justice, policy, media and the power of voices to make the change we want to see in the world. A portion of time will be spent doing work for CCC's sister organization, CCCAction.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Pitching stories and developing relationships with high-level and elite media in order to highlight the work of CCC/CCCA and our issue campaigns.
  • Developing creative ideas to strengthen CCC's and CCCA's public brands among diverse audiences and raising the visibility of community organizing, building power and growing leadership in communities of color.
  • Writing media advisories, statements and press releases.
  • Acting as a liaison at public events for press and as a spokesperson if needed.
  • Creating high level content, such as writing op-eds, designing graphics and/or producing video or other multimedia content.
  • Managing content creators, such as CCC/A communications fellows and guiding their work from idea to realization. Working as editor, mentor and coach to fellows.
  • Administrative duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • More than six years working in journalism, communications or related field. Preference for candidates with at least eight years of experience or more.
  • Extensive experience developing media strategies, pitching stories, working with or writing press releases and planning press events.
  • Demonstrated skills as a writer, content creator and editor.
  • Top-notch communications and presentation skills.
  • A high degree of comfort in managing multiple tasks and deadlines and working in a fluid and fast-paced environment. Flexibility and ability to shift and move a must.
  • Commitment to social and economic justice, collaborative processes, and the participation and leadership of low-income people and their organizations.
  • Knowledge of key issue areas, such as poverty and economic justice, and the role of politics and policy to affect change in issue areas.

This person reports to: The Director of Content Strategy and Development

The Center for Community Change recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is not included in the CCC bargaining unit and therefore not covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Salary and benefits: $75,000 – $80,000.
