[Unicum] Caslling those with literary interests

The Hungarian Forum at the Modern Language Association is sponsoring two panels.  Below is the information.  A caveat: presenters have to be members of the MLA by April 7.

Please see the two calls attached and below.  One session is guaranteed, the collaborative session will be determined later, as noted.

MLA Convention, January 3-6, 2019, Chicago IL

Dear Colleagues,

As Acting Chair of the Forum on Hungarian Literature and Culture at the MLA Convention in Chicago, IL January 3-6, 2019, I am pleased to invite you to actively participate in the sessions we are organizing for the event. The presidential theme for the 2019 convention is #Textual Transactions. Our proposals reflect our engagement with the presidential theme.  We are planning two sessions.  One is guaranteed since we are a Forum.  We can also organize a collaborative one with another Forum.  At the New York City meeting we discussed this with the Romanian Forum agreed to submit a proposal for a collaborative session with them.  Thus the two calls for papers.  Both proposals reflect our engagement with the presidential theme.

Guaranteed Session

Below is the expanded Call for Papers for our guaranteed session.  The short form has been posted to the MLA web page, but we hope to solicit papers from a much broader group.  Also, this is a longer version which gives more information than a 35-word entry can.

Imaging Hungary through Literature

The Executive Committee seeks papers on a broad range of literary approaches to imaging Hungary through Hungarian literature, or the presentation of Hungarian literature in contemporary writings.  Sources can be Hungarian literature in translation, in the original, or in literatures other than Hungarian, with emphasis on 20th century and contemporary works.

We are seeking papers that look at Hungary and Hungarian literature broadly in the context of world literature.  As an example, the works of Antal Szerb, Sándor Márai and Magda Szabó are enjoying popularity in translations.  What do they say to the American reader about Hungary and Hungarian literature?  What do they bring to a fuller recognition of Hungarian literature by non-Hungarian readers?  What do they contribute to world literature?  These questions do not necessarily need an intimate knowledge of Hungarian literature, but a thoughtful assessment of the milieu presented, even in cases where the setting might not be Hungarian, e.g. Journey by Moonlight.  Contemporaries such as László Kraszanahorkai, Ferenc Barnás or Szilárd Borbély among others also focus attention on Hungary though their works.

Another approach would be to examine differences in representation of Hungary and/or Hungarian literature in German, French, and English language works. We hope to attract papers not only from those fluent in Hungarian, but also those who have encountered Hungary through literary works in translation or only through intermediation.

Please send 250 word abstracts and brief CV to Eniko M. Basa (eniko.basa@verizon.net) by March 15, 2018, but preferably earlier.

Non-Guaranteed Session

We are soliciting papers for a session which we will propose in conjunction with another MLA group.  Final approval of the session will arrive in late spring.  The organizers will contact speakers about the session’s status as soon as they can.

The second panel we are proposing is collaborative with the Romanian Literature Forum. We are proposing a round table entitled:  “ Contemporary Cultural Interactions in Transylvania.”

Hungary and Romania have had a close cultural relationship in Transylvania for many generations.  In this multi-ethnic region, Romanian, Hungarian, and German cultural and literary expressions have flourished.  Similar backgrounds and approaches, similar and divergent themes have made for vibrant responses from authors on all sides.  The result is not a mere interaction of the various groups, but rather informed parts of a whole. The multi-ethnic milieu that informs the literary and cultural approaches of the region is a prime example of textual transcriptions reaching across communities.  Papers could address, among other topics, the works of Ádam Bodor, György Dragoman, Romulus Bucor, Eginald Schlattner, Marta Petreu, Alexandru Vlad, Horia Ursu, among many others.

We invite papers on multi-ethnic interactions in contemporary Transylvanian literature and culture, broadly defined. Papers may address works in Romanian, Hungarian, or German.  All papers will be presented in English. This Special Session proposal is a collaborative session with LLC Hungarian and LLC Romanian. Please send a 300-word abstract by March 1, 2018 to Enikö Molnár Basa (eniko.basa@verizon.net) and Julia Elsky (jelsky@luc.edu).

Please note: this session is not guaranteed.  Selected presenters will be listen in a session proposal that will be submitted to the MLA for review.  The MLA will notify the session organizers of the session’s acceptance by late spring.  Until the organizers confirm the sessions acceptance to the proposed speakers, presenters should not assume they will be part of this session.

Please send 300-word abstracts and brief CVs by 1 March 2018 to Eniko M. Basa (eniko.basa@verizon.net) and Julia Elsky (jelsky@LUC.edu)
