The Future of Academic Freedom: Hungary's Central European University & American Institutions Abroad Human Rights First and the Open Society Policy Center, in partnership with the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University, are pleased to invite you to a panel discussion on threats to academic freedom in Hungary and the fate of American institutions abroad. In April, the Hungarian parliament passed legislation that may soon force Central European University (CEU)—one of the most respected universities in Europe—to close its doors. Should the law remain, the people of Hungary and students from across the globe stand to lose an institution dedicated to their betterment. Further, similar American institutions abroad may be targeted to extract political concessions from the U.S. Government. This is a vital moment to protect academic freedom and critical thought in Hungary – we hope you can join us for this discussion. This discussion will highlight the experiences of impacted students and faculty from CEU as they as they face an increasingly challenging environment for Hungarian democracy. Lunch will be provided.
