[Unicum] Embassy of Hungary Press Release: FLYING PULI at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival Hungarian Heritage: Roots to Revival Program

What is a Puli?

Puli is a small-medium sized, traditional Hungarian breed shepherd's dog for herding and guarding. Its long corded coat, made of curls similar to dreadlocks, make it virtually waterproof.

Puli is also a giant interactive public art installation to be built on the National Mall by Hungary-born artist Gábor Miklós Szőke who graduated from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts. He's already made a name for himself in the contemporary art world. Throughout the past few years, he's been creating massive sculptures by screwing wooden slats of various sizes together. The dinosaur he created for the Hungarian Wood Festival in 2010, was 51 feet while the whale he made for the CET Culture Centre measured an astounding 78 feet long.

Beast, the puli of Facebook Founder-CEO Mark Zuckerberg, is probably the most famous puli  who lives in Palo Alto, CA with Mark and Priscilla. He likes cuddling and herding things. Most probably all Hungarian-Americans living in the United States like Beast, because he has exactly 1.5 million likes, which is the number of Americans with Hungarian origin based on the 2010 U.S. Census. In case you haven't met him yet, visit him on Facebook or maybe meet him and other pulis on June 29th at 5:00 pm on the National Mall!

[Unicum] Concert of Szalonna and his Band featuring Bob Cohen - at the AU Katzen Arts Center on July 1, 2013 at 7:00pm!

Please join us for a concert of

Concert of Szalonna and his Band featuring Bob Cohen

at the AU Katzen Arts Center on July 1, 2013 at 7:00pm!

Authentic Hungarian folk and klezmer music featuring Bob Cohen, one of the most important figures in Jewish and Eastern-European music today.

SZALONNA AND HIS BAND are musicians of the Hungarian National Folk Ensemble. Their concerts feature the beautiful tunes of the Danubian basin. Apart from interpretations of folk music, they also work with their material in innovative ways. Band members all consider the preservation of traditions an important task and are committed teachers and instructors of folk music. They participate regularly at the most popular festivals in Hungary and have recently toured extensively in Europe and overseas.

BOB COHEN approaches klezmer music as a living folk art, and presents it in the style it would have been performed in its heyday. In addition to Hungarian, Romanian, Moldavian and Yiddish music, his repertoir also includes traditional Hasidic tunes. In 1993, he founded Di Naye Kapelye (The New Band) with accordionist Christina Crowder and bassist Géza Pénzes. Their 2008 album, Traktorist, ranked high on Songline World Music Magazine’s ”Top of the World” list of best new albums.

The joint performance of Szalonna and his Band and Bob Cohen is a unique and exclusive opportunity to experience the multicultural heritage of Hungary and Central Europe.

[Unicum] REMINDER: Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister Tibor Navracsics: Central Europe – The Indispensable Region, Heritage Foundation, Tuesday, June 25, 2013

Heritage Foundation

INVITATION

Co-hosted by The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation

Central Europe – The Indispensable Region

Featuring

Tibor Navracsics, Ph.D.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Administration and Justice, Hungary

Hosted by

Lee Edwards, Ph.D.

Chairman, Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, and

Distinguished Fellow in Conservative Thought, The Heritage Foundation

For Central Europe, the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989 marked the beginning of an ongoing journey to full-fledged Euro-Atlantic integration.  Although the transition from dictatorship to democracy, from a centrally planned economy to market economy, and the return to a pro-Western approach in foreign policy are considered by most observers a success story, the transition did not solve the region's problems all at once.  There is an increasing feeling in the capitals of Central Europe that these countries are now considered to be "check-check-done," somehow forgotten from a strategic aspect.  However, Central Europe is as important to the Atlantic Alliance as Washington is to these countries, through security policy, energy policy and democratic governance.  Many lessons can be learned from the countries of Central Europe, and there are important aspects of cooperation here for any American administration that seeks reliable Atlanticist democracies willing to offer their experience of transitioning from tyranny to liberty.

Join us as Dr. Tibor Navracsics examines Central European cooperation and why the region is of utmost importance in different spheres such as Atlanticism, European perspectives, and foreign policy.

Dr. Tibor Navracsics served as the Head of the Communication and Information Department for the Prime Minister's Office from 1998 to 2002.  From 2006 to 2010 he was elected MP for Veszprém from the county list, served as head of the parliamentary group of Fidesz – Hungarian Civic Union, and was a member of the Committee for Constitutional and Judicial Affairs.  In 2010, he was elected MP for Veszprém's individual constituency, and became Deputy Prime Minister as well as Minister of Public Administration and Justice.  He holds a Ph.D. in political science and is well-placed to speak about Central Europe's importance in world affairs today.

Tükrös Ensemble: Tunes from Hungary

Authentic Village Music and Dance from Hungary and Transylvania.

One of the best Hungarian folk ensemble interpreting traditional values.

The TÜKRÖS Folk Music Ensemble was founded in 1986 and today is one of Hungary's most respected revival folk bands, which specializes in collecting authentic folk music from remote villages of Hungary and Transylvania, and from archival recordings, preserving and presenting this music in its most authentic form in an entertaining style suitable for all audiences. Their performance is a voyage back to a time when traditional folk music was an integral and crucial part of the village community's daily life. TÜKRÖS CDs have been very popular, especially their disc of folk music collection from Szatmár County (North Eastern Hungary), which became a landmark release. In addition to performing, the band members are dedicated to teaching folk music in schools and organizing an annual folk music camp in Hungary.

TÜKRÖS members are professional musicians with decades of experience in performing. The band has toured throughout Europe, twice in Australia and once in North America. Members include: Attila Halmos, violin – became attracted to folk music at an early age through the activities of his father who was an ethnomusicologist; Gergely Koncz, violin - one of Hungary's youngest and most talented folk violinists; Péter Árendás, viola – a key figure in the collection of folk music for FONÓ Records and the musical director of the BUDAPEST Folk Ensemble; Endre Liber, viola and cimbalom – a prominent musician in the Budapest folk music scene with many years of experience; András Lelkes, double bass – a multifaceted musician with experience in folk music as well as jazz. [Unicum] Smithsonian Folklife Festival

I’d like to call your attention to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival taking place on the Mall from June 26-30 and July 3-7.  Hungary is the featured country, hence my interest.  Other components are One World, Many Voices: Endangered Languages and Cultural Heritage which pairs cultural arts with language, and The Will to Adorn: Aftrican American Diversity, Style and Identity.

I am a volunteer at the Hungarian section mainly translating for crafts persons so visitors can interact with them.  Maybe I’llk also be  assigned to the food, wine, or other tents.  The Festival promises to be a great one, and while I know little about the Language and African American venues they promise to be interesting interactive opportunities as well, judging from our Volunteer Orientation today.  I will be a volunteer from June 26-30 and on July 3.

Items created by the craftpersons (made in advance) will be sold in the Marketplace;  Hungarian food will be served in the Budapest Bistro and the Tokay Tavern has received permission to serve wine and beer.  The Danubia Stage will present music and information and the Dance Barn will not only feature Hungarian ethnic dances from the Carpathian region but will also hold dance classes (the traditional Táncház).  The emphasis of the Festival is on interaction with the visitors and Hungary is geared up for this.  Some of the buildings reflects traditional Hungarian folk architecture and you will be able  to experience rural life which is probably no longer familiar even to urban Hungarians.  Of course, there will be lots of music and dance as well.

The Festival runs from June 26-June 30 and from July 3-7.  See http://www.festival.si.edu for more information.

Hope to see you there, or if you come later maybe we will run into each other—I will do my own sightseeing and photos once I am no longer working.

[Unicum] surface mail/partial containers/share move from Europe to eastern US this summer

I would like to move about 0.5 cubic meters / 150 kg of books, papers, clothes and personal items from southern France
(or anywhere in western/central Europe) to the US this summer.  It would be far too expensive to ship it by air.
The perfect thing would be surface mail, which is not offered by many countries (France, Germany, US etc.).  Does anyone know of any
European country which offers it?  Otherwise, is anyone moving to the US or shipping a container who is willing to share expenses?
I could deliver them before mid-August to a departure point.
Thank you,
Gerry Williger gmwilliger@gmail.com
