The ICW is stunningly beautiful.  Enjoy.

Greetings:
I will be taking Odyssey south again this fall, and invite SCOW folks to join in the fun! We have talked about the upper parts of the Intracoastal Waterway, and how a two-week cruise could still reach North Carolina, and sample the ICW experience, with drawbridges to go under, locks to go through, the Great Dismal Swamp (a really beautiful place, despite the name), and Elizabeth City (where the Rose Buddys welcome cruising sailors with free dockage and a party!).

Tentative schedule is to start with the Schooner Rendezvous at Cambridge, MD, on the Choptank River. This is scheduled for October 19-21. My plan is to anchor in Dunn Cove or Ledenham Creek on Thursday (18), to arrive in Cambridge Friday, with time to settle in before the reception at the Richardson Museum. Saturday would be spent in Cambridge, and Sunday (21) depart for Solomons, MD, anchoring in Mill Creek. Monday (22) would be on to the Great Wicomico, Tuesday (23) to Fishing Bay, and Wednesday (24) to an anchorage or marina near Hampton. Thursdays (25) destination would be Portsmouth, and hopefully we can find a free tie up in one of the basins there, or take a slip at Tidewater marina or Waterside in Norfolk. Friday or Saturday (27) morning would begin with locking onto the ICW at Great Bridge, and stop at the Visitors Center for the night, where cruisers visit to talk about their plans. Sunday (28) we could reach Elizabeth City, where they welcome cruisers warmly! Some folks may turn around at this point and head back to the Chesapeake. Others may want to head into the Albemarle Sound. Edenton (historic village) or Manteo are possible stops there, before continuing down the ICW to the Alligator River.

Three weeks would be ideal, but a nice cruise could be done in two, and even a long weekend in Cambridge would be enjoyable. The Schooner Rendezvous is one of my favorite events on the Bay!

I welcome input from anyone wishing to join the trip, and would like to hear from skippers and potential crew. I will try to coordinate this cruise, although the schedule will of course depend on weather conditions. I am more interested in us all being safe and having fun that in reaching any particular destination by a specific time.

fair winds,
