GALVANIZE: Seeking Music Director

Anacostia Playhouse is seeking to hire a musical director that is a Gospel musician. Said musician must be able to play by ear as well as read sheet music for the musical production of BREAKTHROUGH written by Verna Craighead Green. Breakthrough is a contemporary two act production about a young man who has to decide between the draw of the church versus the draw of the street. 


MUSICAL DIRECTOR/CONDUCTOR

Please submit a headshot and resume along with an audition video that should include:

  1. An up tempo gospel song 

  2. A gospel worship song


Please submit all information in one email to casting@anacostiaplayhouse.com with Breakthrough, musical director, and your name in the subject line. All submissions are due by October 7th. There will be a call back audition before final decisions are made.


COMPENSATION

Commensurate stipend


Rehearsals will begin November 1, 2022, to be held Tuesday - Sunday evenings to include most weekends.


Performances 

Preview dates: November 29 - 30, December 1-3

Show opens: December 3, 2022, evening performance 

Show run:  December 3 - January 8, 2023 (Thursday through Sunday with two performances    

   on Saturdays)

Special Matinee performances: Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day

J.B. - Early 20's, Singer tenor range, Pablo's friend, jovial-heavy set build

MIKE - Late 20's, Stylish, mysterious friend

FAITHIA - Tony's sister, Pablo's former girlfriend, late 20's, Singer 2nd soprano/alto 

range

ANNA BROWN - Late 20's, Singer 2nd soprano/alto range, Mother of J.B. zealous 

church woman, homemaker


REMAINING ROLES:


GREG - Late 20's, Singer tenor range, Pablo's friend, basketball player

DIANE - Early 20s, works at the diner, sexually aggressive

REV. MOORE - Early 50's, Church Pastor, fiery minister

SIS. MOORE - Late 40's, Pastor's wife, Anna's friend, Singer alto range

SIS RUTH JONES - Late 40's, Church lady, friend of Anna, Soprano Singer 

ANGEL - A figment of Anna's imagination, powerful soprano singer 

DINER GIRLS (3) (non-speaking, double as congregation Singers: SAT

CONGREGATION/PIT SINGERS (5) Males, Females mixture: SATB


ACTORS/PERFORMERS

The Hungarian Academy and the Kossuth Foundation is pleased to invite you to an evening with the world-renowned performer László Dés. The program is for all ages, children and adults will enjoy the music.

Date: Sunday, October 9, 2022
Time: 6pm
Place: Alexandria History Museum at the Lyceum Hall, 201 S Washington St, Alexandria, VA 22314

László Dés the Kossuth- and Liszt Ferenc prize winner, Hungarian performer, composer,  jazz musician, and meritorious artist will perform his musical work. We will enjoy well known songs from theater plays like The Jungle Book, We'll Never Die, The Pál Street Boys Streetcar of Desire. Spend the night with the popular and well-known artist who fills huge stadiums in Hungary. 

Space is limited, reserve your spot now. Suggested donation is $25 per person. Reservation is required, no on-site registration. 

We are also offering an opportunity to 6 people to join the artist and his wife for a lunch meet-and-greet on Sunday, October 9 at 1pm in the Old Ebbitt Grill. Suggested donation for VIP is $200 per person (includes VIP entry with front row reserved seat to the performance and lunch on Sunday).
