RE: [Unicum] water meter

Hi Vince,

I agree with the previous letters. I would start with the check of the leaking toilet. If that is ruled out, then you may have an underground leakage. The crucial question is if the leakage is between your house and the meter (usually your responsibility) or beyond the meter (water company's responsibility). A previous letter described very well the procedure that helps you to find the answer to this question.

In our county (Howard) they give you some relief in such cases, just contact them. I also thought about the recent renovations you did on your house. Is it possible that their work might have damaged the pipes somewhere? Keep that in mind when the plumbing company (if you hire one) surveys your pipes (they can do it with a camera to find the leak).

Best wishes,

Szőllős Sanyi

Subject: [Unicum] water meter

Hi,

Our water consumption  is usually about $60.

Surprisingly, our most recent  bill ,received last Friday, charges $540.

In the previous period our water usage was the  same as it was before or even less, and we did not use our garden house to water plants either. A check of the water pipes and appliances showed no leakage or malfunction of any kind.

Anyone has some suggestion as to what might have happened and how to avoid it?

Thanks

Vince

Not sure where you live and if you have the Dominion power add-on insurance for water. If you do,  they will fix the water pipe between the house and the street for free. I think it's about $7 per month. So worth it.

Vince, you probably have a leak in the underground water pipe outside, between the house and the meter. My suggestion is that you shut off the main valve where the pipe enters the house (it is probably in the basement) and check the meter (it is probably next to the curb outside). If the meter still  moves than you have a leak in the underground pipe; sometimes it may be substantial. It is quite expensive to fix (has to be found first) but, as Zoltan says, at least the water company drops part of their charge if you send them the repair bill (to prove that you had the repair done). Good luck. Janos.

This happened to me, almost identical story. It was one of the toilets that was leaking. When I got it fixed and sent them the plumber's receipt, the water company let go about one third of the bill.

Same thing happened to our friend. In their case their irrigation system was leaking. They contacted the water company too and they only ended paying for half of the bill.
