(Career Progress) JOB: Comms Manager, Faithful America (Remote) -- $65-75k

Hi, I'm helping Faithful America hire a creative, strategic and media-savvy Communications Manager.

This is a fully remote role within the contiguous U.S. that has a salary range of $65-75k.

Faithful America is a network of progressive Christians demonstrating their faith through bold, prophetic action for a more equitable, free, and loving world.

Since 2004, Faithful America has been educating, organizing, and mobilizing social-justice Christians to advance Jesus' prophetic vision of God's Kingdom and to challenge White Christian Nationalism and all the ways it harms our neighbors, the Christian faith, and our democracy.

In this current moment of theological and political crisis for American Christianity, Faithful America is building grassroots power to oppose the Christofascist Trump regime and effectively transform unjust systems and ideologies that are built and sustained by those in power -- whether they be faith leaders, politicians, or corporations.

The right candidate for this role will be an excellent writer with a strong background in strategic comms and media relations who responds creatively in rapid response moments, wants to use media not only to gain attention but to build power, and feels passionate about challenging white Christian Nationalism and uplifting a bold public witness rooted in love and justice.

In addition, a desire to use strong, unapologetic messaging, speak truth to power, and call out bad actors by name is vital.

While not required, experience at a progressive, mission-driven organization (e.g., an advocacy group, faith-based nonprofit, political campaign, labor union, or similar) is particularly valuable.

You can find the full job listing and application instructions below my signature line.

Please let me know if you're interested, and I am happy to answer questions about the role. But please apply directly to Faithful America per the application instructions below.

Matt Lockshin (he, his)
Progressive Recruiter & Coach

Interested in finding a digital job in the U.S. progressive advocacy or electoral space? Check out my job board and register for my resume bank.

Sent from Victoria, BC --  the ancestral, traditional and unceded territory of the Lekwungen speaking peoples, the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations.

About Faithful America:

Faithful America is a network of progressive Christians demonstrating our faith through bold, prophetic action for a more equitable, free, and loving world. We're a community of Christians from all denominations and none, churched and unchurched, who integrate spiritual practice and organized action to love our neighbors and to resist those twisting our faith to cause them harm.

Since 2004, we have been educating, organizing, and mobilizing social-justice Christians to advance Jesus' prophetic vision of God's Kingdom and to challenge White Christian Nationalism and all the ways it harms our neighbors, our faith, and our democracy. We are building grassroots power to oppose the Christofascist Trump regime and effectively transform unjust systems and ideologies that are built and sustained by those in power -- whether they be faith leaders, politicians, or corporations.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a creative, strategic and media-savvy Communications Manager to develop an integrated communications strategy, lead the planning and executions of our media campaigns, help us identify and capitalize on social media opportunities, and hone our organizational messaging.

The day-to-day work of the Communications Manager will include a mix of:

  • Developing high-level strategies and nailing their implementation,
  • Doing tried-and-true media outreach and finding novel ways for us to reach our target audiences, and
  • Sharpening how we talk about our work and changing how we plan our campaigns to make our work more visible and mediagenic.

Note: While the Communications Manager will be in charge of helping the team identify social media opportunities and will sometimes produce social media content (often in partnership with the ED or others on the team), this role will not be responsible for organization-wide social media strategy, account management or day-to-day social media content production.

This is a new role on our growing team, and an opportunity to work closely with our new Executive Director to shape the vision for a bold and unflinching communications program .

We're looking for someone with a strong background in strategic communications and media relations who can pitch reporters and podcast hosts in the morning, partner with the Executive Director to dream big about narrative strategy before lunch, and distill a campaign brainstorming session into crisp, effective messaging in the afternoon.

The right candidate will be a strategic thinker and excellent writer who responds creatively in rapid response moments, wants to use media not only to gain attention but to build power, and feels passionate about challenging white Christian Nationalism and uplifting a bold public witness rooted in love and justice.

In addition, a desire to use strong, unapologetic messaging, speak truth to power, and call out bad actors by name is vital.

Responsibilities

Communications Strategy & Implementation

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and staff to develop and implement a values-rooted communications strategy and organizational voice that advance our mission and campaigns.
  • Draft and maintain an annual communications plan, updating it as needed.
  • Identify high-impact moments and flashpoints — including breaking news and rapid-response opportunities — and help the team respond quickly and strategically to elevate our voice, build power and increase the impact of our work.
  • Partner with campaign staff to ensure communications strategies are integrated into every step of campaign planning, from inception through execution.
  • Draft sharp, persuasive communications content (esp. press releases and advisories, public statements, talking points, letters to the editor, op-eds, and social media posts) tailored for a variety of audiences.
  • Help colleagues identify opportunities for impactful multimedia content (e.g., short videos, simple graphics for social media), and collaborate with them on the creation of this content.
  • Ensure communications systems and infrastructure — such as calendars, review processes, and message guides — are well organized, sustainable, and aligned with team workflows.

Media Relations & Press Engagement

  • Design and implement media campaigns (including those that combine earned, digital, and rapid-response tactics) to drive coverage and visibility for our campaigns and organization.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with reporters, editors, producers, and content creators in both faith-based and secular outlets — including print, broadcast, online media, and podcasts.
  • Identify timely and strategic story angles that reflect our campaigns and values, and pitch those stories proactively to press and media influencers.
  • Curate and manage press lists, and prepare media materials such as press releases, media kits, statements, and advisories.
  • Prepare staff, supporters, and coalition partners for media opportunities, including interviews and public speaking engagements.

Other Responsibilities

  • Track key communications metrics and stay current on trends in communications and advocacy to inform strategic improvements and experimentation.
  • Represent Faithful America in coalition spaces and communications working groups (including occasionally at in-person convenings or events).
  • Participate in regular staff meetings and strategy sessions as an engaged, collaborative team member.
  • Pitch in on other tasks as needed, especially in moments of organizational pivot, urgency, or opportunity — always with a focus on sustainable workload and shared team accountability.

Success in the First 12 Months Looks Like:

  • You understand Faithful America's mission, vision, goals, major campaigns, and the broader context in which we operate, and you are able to answer general inquiries about these topics from the public, our members or the press.
  • Working with the Executive Director, you have developed a comprehensive communications strategy that aligns with Faithful America's strategic plan and campaign goals.
  • You are regularly producing effective, well-messaged communications materials that are appropriately targeted and delivered on schedule, and you are doing a good job project-managing the communications work generally.
  • Your approach to planning and project-managing your work does a good job balancing the need to plan for long-term, proactive communications campaigns with the need to adjust to emerging developments and take advantage of important rapid response opportunities.
  • Your implementation of our strategic communications strategy has led to tangible results in terms of any of the following: number of media mentions, the number of times our spokespeople are quoted in the media, coverage by new outlets, or other similar outcomes.
  • You are ensuring we're consistently using social media in rapid response moments to increase our visibility and make sure a social-justice Christian perspective is represented in ongoing conversations.
  • You have developed both the collaborative relationships and the work processes necessary to ensure cohesive messaging and integrated communications planning across our campaigns.
  • You're regularly tracking, reporting on and analyzing relevant communications metrics, and you're coming up with ways to improve your own work on an ongoing basis.
  • In all aspects of your work, you are embodying the values of the organization and doing your part to support a healthy, equitable and respectful work culture.

Qualifications:

Note: We know there are great candidates who might not check all the boxes listed below, or who possess important skills we haven't thought of as it relates to this position and the organization writ large. If that's you, please don't hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

You could be great for this role if:

  • You resonate deeply with Faithful America's mission, vision and values, and have a fire in your belly to challenge white Christian nationalism and lift up a bold public witness rooted in love and justice.
  • You have at least 3–5 years of experience in a strategic communications role, including a strong background in media relations.
  • You're a strong writer who can quickly distill complex issues into persuasive messaging tailored to different audiences,
  • You're a strategic and creative thinker who isn't afraid to use bold messaging or experiment with unconventional approaches.
  • You have a solid understanding of social media tactics, strategy and best practices (esp. those relevant to public-facing organizations).
  • You are comfortable using content creation tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Spark, Photoshop, CapCut) and social media management platforms (e.g., Buffer, Later).
  • You're a self-motivated, collaborative team member with a growth mindset, strong problem-solving skills, and knack for building strong, collaborative relationships grounded in mutual trust and respect.
  • You are highly organized, have a strong and consistent attention to detail, and are able to juggle multiple competing priorities without letting something fall through the cracks.
  • You have a strong equity lens and can work effectively across lines of personal difference.
  • You have a social and political understanding of various types of systemic oppression -- such as White Supremacy, patriarchy, and heteronormativity (as distinct from overt bigotry or discrimination) -- and are committed to fighting oppression in its many forms.

Although not required, strong candidates will have some of the following:

  • Experience at a progressive, mission-driven organization (e.g., an advocacy group, faith-based nonprofit, political campaign, labor union, or similar).
  • A track record of impactful media work (e.g., story placement, high-quality quotes or mentions, published op-eds, strong journalist relationships, etc.), especially in religious or political journalism.
  • A detailed understanding of the social and political landscape related to white Christian nationalism and the religious right.
  • Familiarity with the values and mindsets of diverse Christian communities in the US.
  • Experience designing and running communications campaigns that exerted public pressure on specific, named leaders or institutions to follow a specific course of action.
  • A demonstrated ability to plan and execute successful earned-media events (e.g., rallies, press conferences, etc.).
  • A background in organizing, movement-building, or campaign strategy, and comfort using strategic frameworks like power mapping, escalation, and base-building.
  • Experience creating videos and graphics designed for social media distribution.
  • Experience using tools like Meltwater or Muck Rack for media monitoring and outreach.
  • Experience in rapid response campaigns, crisis communications, or any role that involved writing lots of content under tight deadlines.
  • A background that includes active involvement in progressive social movements, particularly those that work to support racial justice, environmental justice, economic justice, gender equity, and/or immigrant rights.
  • Experience working at a small nonprofit or start-up.
  • Experience running social media campaigns not just to drive awareness but also to drive meaningful engagement toward specific policy outcomes.

Compensation

This position offers a salary range of $65,000 - $75,000.

Benefits include a monthly health-care stipend of $550, short-term and long-term disability insurance, access to a non-matched 401(k) program, and benefits for wellness and self-care.

The Faithful America office may also close between Christmas and New Year's, and on three Fridays each summer.

Flexible structure

This is a full-time, exempt position that reports to Faithful America's Executive Director. The workload will average approximately 40 hours/week. Faithful America is committed to supporting a healthy work/life balance for its employees through flexible hours and wellness benefits.
