Hello Members, I'm looking for rent in the Bethesda/Washington DC area probably from early spring. I'm a geneticists from Hungary and worked at Johns Hopkins, Baltimore, a few years ago. If my visa goes well, I would be moving back to the US from Hungary probably in March. Until I find something long-term, it would be best to rent a place on the short-term or with a flexible lease. I also have a rescue cat who is American and house-trained. The ideal place is quiet and there's public transport to NIH (49 Convent Drive, Bethesda, MD). Many thanks.

HYPPOLIT, THE BUTLER.

1931 Digitally remastered edition

Hungarian movie with English subtitles, 72 minutes

Mátyás Schneider (Gyula Kabos) is a typical parvenu, an ignorant transportation entrepreneur who has become very rich quickly. Despite their humble origins, his wife (Mici Haraszti) strives to live a 'sophisticated' and 'aristocratic' lifestyle. When she engages a butler, Hyppolit (Gyula Csortos) - who was an educated man, and who has served in the household of a late count for 27 years and traveled around the world with the late Count - their whole life is turned upside down: Schneider has to shave off his mustache, wear a dinner suit for dinner and eat French food instead of his beloved onions and roasted goose, while his wife is bullied by the butler into engaging in gymnastics and a rather meagre diet.

In the meantime, the Schneiders' spirited daughter, Terka (Éva Fenyvessy), falls for their good-looking manager, the former driver István Benedek (Pál Jávor), who keeps secret that he is in fact an engineer with a college diploma. Her mother, however, would prefer the good-natured, but quite stupid Makáts (Gyula Gózon) as a suitor, because Makáts's uncle (Sándor Góth), a city councillor, may help them to get a lucrative contract.

Things begin to turn upside down, when Schneider follows Hyppolit's suggestions to start dating Mimi (Mici Erdélyi), a singer and dancer at a sleazy night club. When he fails to show up at a date with her, the girl enters the Schneiders' villa, where a dinner party with important guests - including Makáts's uncle - is taking place, and causes a scandal. Meanwhile, Terka follows her own plans to get the man she wants...

  • Assist with LCV’s electoral work, including work with candidates, PAC investments and the Congressional Candidate Questionnaire.
  • Collaborate with the Development department and other staff to craft materials that will help raise resources for our climate and clean energy work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Frances

Title: Legislative Director

Status: Exempt

Reports to: Vice President of Government Affairs

Positions Reporting to this Position: Legislative Representatives

Description:

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) works to turn environmental values into national, state and local priorities. LCV, in collaboration with our state LCV partners, advocates for sound environmental laws and policies, holds elected officials accountable for their votes and actions, and elects pro-environment candidates who will champion our priority issues.

LCV's work to protect and advocate for the environment is rooted in our commitment to racial, social and environmental justice. Engaging communities of color, among other key constituencies is an organizational priority. Within the organization, we aim to create a workplace culture and policies and practices that demonstrate how we value equity and inclusion.

We are seeking a well-respected and strategic leader to direct our advocacy work on the broad suite of environmental policy issues on which LCV works. The Legislative Director should have a proven track record in federal government relations, strong command of national climate policy and experience with a wide range of environmental issues, good political judgement, and be committed to racial and environmental justice. This high-level addition to LCV's governmental affairs team will help craft and oversee our advocacy strategy, including both our proactive legislative agenda and defending against executive branch attacks on core environmental protections and attempts to reverse progress on climate change, clean energy, lands conservation, water protections and other issues.

Responsibilities:

Provide leadership and strategic vision for LCV's advocacy efforts on federal environmental policy with a strong focus on climate change.

Serve as LCV's senior lobbyist and build a strong network of relationships directly with members of Congress, as well as high-level personal office staff and key committee and leadership staff.

Ensure that LCV's policy advocacy advances racial justice and equity, including through deepening staff-level understanding of the connection between environmental and racial justice, building organizational partnerships, and working with leaders of color in Congress.

Serve as a high-level national spokesperson for LCV and help shape our policy-related communications and messaging strategies.

Lead the production of LCV's nationally-recognized National Environmental Scorecard and direct the department's real-time tracking of recent votes.

Collaborate effectively with LCV's Policy and Lobbying team, external coalitions, and our state league partners to block, weaken or delay Congressional and executive branch attacks on our nation's bedrock environmental laws and to advance a pro-environment agenda.

Provide leadership to and work across the Membership and Online Engagement, Communications, Field, and Chispa teams to effectively advance our policy priorities and ensure veracity of our materials.

Possess a strong overall assessment of macro-dynamics in Congress to effectively craft the legislative strategy to advance LCV's policy priorities.

Partner with the Conservation Voter Movement, a network of over 30 state leagues, on various projects and provide timely updates on top priority federal legislation.

Play a senior role in LCV's electoral work, including through engagement with candidates, PAC investments, and updating the Congressional Candidate Questionnaire.

Assist with fundraising efforts, including writing high quality proposals and reports and cultivating individual donors.

Qualifications:

  • Work Experience: At least 7-10 years of work experience. Background working on Capitol Hill, in the executive branch, or at an advocacy or political organization strongly preferred.
  • Skills: Policy analysis and research, federal government relations, coalition-building, strong political judgement, excellent written and verbal communication skills, including delivering public presentations. Ideally, the candidate will also have experience using social media tools, such as Facebook and Twitter. Strong interpersonal and management skills with an ability to develop relationships with individuals representing a rich mix of race, gender, talent, experience, and background. Organized and attentive to details; commitment to teamwork and community; ability to handle multiple tasks, effectively prioritize and thrive in a fast-paced setting.
  • Cultural Competence: Demonstrated awareness of one's own cultural identity, views about difference, and the ability to learn and build on varying cultural and community norms. A commitment to the complex understanding of racial justice and the urgency of confronting institutional racism and inequity within our political system. Commitment to equity and inclusion as organizational practice and culture. Commitment to environmental protection and mission of LCV.
  • Conditions: Able to work long hours to get the job done. This position is based in Washington, D.C. but qualified candidates outside of D.C. are welcome to apply.

Compensation:
Compensation for the Legislative Director includes a competitive salary commensurate with experience; health care plan including optical and dental; paid time off and holidays, retirement benefits, student loan repayment and a sabbatical policy.

To Apply: Send cover letter and resume to hr@lcv.org with "Legislative Director" in the subject line no later than February 15, 2019. No phone calls please.
